Zanzibar after safari: which coast to choose
By Mohammed, a local Arusha guide · Arusha, Tanzania · Last updated 20 September 2026
The short answer
The Tanzania coast is the natural end to a safari, and you fly there in one to two hours. For swimming and a lively first visit choose Zanzibar's north (Nungwi and Kendwa). For quiet luxury and honeymoons choose the east coast (Matemwe, Pongwe, Paje). For diving and whale sharks choose Mafia or Pemba. Add at least three beach nights, more if you can, and expect the coast to be at its best from June to October and December to February.
How the beach fits your safari
A safari runs on early mornings and long game drives, so most travellers finish on the coast to unwind. The link is a short bush flight: a light aircraft leaves the Serengeti or Arusha and lands on Zanzibar in roughly one to two hours, then a road transfer of up to about an hour and a quarter takes you to your beach. There is no practical drive, and you book that flight directly, so we never bury it inside a bundled price.
Give the beach at least three nights. The flight eats one day, and the tide decides when you swim, so three nights buys you two full, unhurried days by the water. Seven nights or more across safari and beach together is the sweet spot for a first trip.
The coasts, compared
Zanzibar is not one beach but several very different ones, and there are two more islands and a mainland shore beyond it. Here is what each is genuinely best for.
Zanzibar North (Nungwi & Kendwa)
- Best for
- First visit, families, swimming, reef trips
- Best months
- Jun to Oct, Dec to Feb
- The beach
- Wide and swimmable right through the tide, the least tidal corner of the island
- The feel
- The liveliest coast, walkable villages, dhow yards, sunset dhow sails
Zanzibar East Coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe, Pongwe)
- Best for
- Quiet luxury, honeymoons, kitesurfing (Paje)
- Best months
- Jun to Oct, Dec to Feb
- The beach
- Long white sand with big tides, glorious at high water, wide flats at low
- The feel
- Slower and more spread out, the strongest luxury lodges (Matemwe, Pongwe)
Zanzibar Stone Town & Southwest
- Best for
- History, culture, spice tours, a night either side
- Best months
- Year round
- The beach
- A harbour town, not a swimming beach; base it for one or two nights
- The feel
- A UNESCO old town of Swahili, Omani and Indian history and markets
Mafia Island
- Best for
- Diving and snorkelling, whale sharks, getting away from crowds
- Best months
- Oct to Mar
- The beach
- Quiet, off the tourist track, inside a protected marine park
- The feel
- Slow and low key; whale sharks pass October to March
Pemba Island
- Best for
- Serious divers, remoteness, green hills
- Best months
- Jun to Oct, Dec to Mar
- The beach
- Very few hotels, dramatic wall dives just offshore
- The feel
- The wild, green sister island, far quieter than Zanzibar
Saadani (mainland coast)
- Best for
- Bush meets beach in one place
- Best months
- Jun to Oct, Jan to Feb
- The beach
- The only spot where wildlife walks the sand and the Indian Ocean meets a national park
- The feel
- A short hop from the mainland, elephants and the sea in a single stay
A note on tides: the east coast has a large tidal range, so at low water the sea withdraws across wide, beautiful flats and swimming pauses for a few hours. The north holds deeper water through the tide. Neither is better, but it changes how a beach day feels, so it is worth choosing on purpose.
When to visit the coast
| Window | Weather | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| June to October | Dry, sunny, breezy; the reliable peak | Best all round, and it pairs with the dry-season and river-crossing safari months. |
| December to February | Hot and sunny between the rains | The second peak; excellent, and it lines up with the calving-season safari in the south. |
| November (short rains) | Brief afternoon showers, still warm | Quieter and good value, with sunshine around the rain. |
| Mid March to May (long rains) | The wettest window, humid | Quietest and greenest, with the lowest lodge rates. Some Mafia and small camps close; the east coast can be heavy. |
Whale sharks pass Mafia from October to March, which is the one window that should move your dates if diving with them is the goal. For a straightforward beach finish, the June to October dry season pairs perfectly with a river-crossing safari.
What the coast costs
The only mandatory government fee on a beach extension is a $5 per person per night infrastructure tax across Zanzibar, which we show as its own line on every quote. Everything else is your lodge rate and any tours you choose. We list every property on a full board basis, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are in the nightly rate.
| Tier | Typical nightly rate (modelled) |
|---|---|
| Comfort | $120 to $250 per person per night |
| Premium | $250 to $500 per person per night |
| Luxury | $500 to $1,200+ per person per night |
Nightly ranges are modelled estimates from typical coast supplier pricing, full board, per person sharing. They are not database figures. Your real Savannah & Sands quote uses live supplier rates and shows the infrastructure tax as a separate line.
A comfortable coast for Muslim travellers
Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island, so halal food is simply the norm, mosques are close wherever you stay, and modest dress is understood and respected. For Muslim families in particular it is one of the easiest and warmest beach destinations in the region, which is close to our own values as a family run, Arusha based company.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best beach in Zanzibar?
It depends on what you want. For swimming right through the tide and a lively base, the north (Nungwi and Kendwa) is hard to beat. For quiet luxury and honeymoons, the east coast (Matemwe, Pongwe, Paje) is better. For history and culture, base a night in Stone Town. There is no single best beach, only the best one for your trip.
North coast or east coast of Zanzibar?
The north keeps a wide, swimmable beach through the whole tide and is livelier, which suits families and first visits. The east coast has bigger tides, so at low water the sea pulls back across wide flats, but it is quieter and holds the strongest luxury lodges. Kitesurfers head to Paje on the east coast.
How many beach nights should I add after a safari?
We recommend at least three. One is eaten by the flight and transfer, and the tide dictates when you swim, so three nights gives you two full unhurried beach days. Five or more is ideal for a proper unwind after the early mornings of a safari.
How do you get from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
You fly. A light aircraft leaves the Serengeti or Arusha and reaches Zanzibar in roughly one to two hours, then a road transfer of up to about an hour and a quarter takes you to your beach. It is the only sensible way across; there is no practical drive.
Zanzibar or Mafia Island for diving?
Mafia. It sits inside one of the richest marine parks in East Africa and whale sharks pass from October to March. Zanzibar's Mnemba atoll off the north east is excellent for snorkelling too, but Mafia and Pemba are the divers' islands.
Is Zanzibar good for Muslim travellers?
Yes. Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island, so halal food is the norm rather than a request, mosques are everywhere, and modest dress is respected and easy. It is one of the most comfortable beach destinations in the region for Muslim families.
What government fees apply on the coast?
Just one that is mandatory: a $5 per person per night infrastructure tax across Zanzibar. We show it as its own line on any beach extension. Everything else is your lodge rate and any tours you choose.
