Jan to Mar
Calving on the short grass
The herds gather on the Ndutu plains to give birth. Predators follow, so this is the window with the highest chance of dramatic sightings. Warm, green, and quieter than the dry season.
Apr to May
Green season, lower rates
The long rains bring afternoon downpours, deep colour and the year's lowest lodge rates. A handful of seasonal camps close. Roads are slower, but you often have a sighting entirely to yourself.
Jun to Oct
Dry season and river crossings
Water thins out and wildlife concentrates. The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti usually fall between July and October. Peak months, peak rates, and the most reliable game viewing of the year.
Nov to Dec
Short rains, short queues
Brief showers clear the dust and the herds drift back south. Landscapes turn green again, camps are easier to book, and the coast settles into its clearest, calmest stretch.
