About

About Dhow Palace Hotel.

Dhow Palace sits on Baghani Street in Shangani, the seaward corner of Stone Town where the old consulates and merchant houses stand shoulder to shoulder in lanes too narrow for two cars. The house was built as a merchant family home and became a hotel in 1993, with a second wing and the courtyard swimming pool added in 2005. Thirty rooms are arranged over several floors around two courtyards, so the noise of the town drops away the moment you step through the door, and what you hear instead is water in the courtyard and the call to prayer from the mosques around you.

The character of the place is in its furniture. Carved Zanzibari doors, brass bound chests, four poster beds under mosquito netting, sunken tiled baths in some of the rooms, and antique pieces that mix Omani, Indian and African work, which is what Stone Town itself is made of. Rooms are air conditioned and have a fridge, a kettle, satellite television and wifi, and the quietest of them look into the courtyard rather than the street. Breakfast is served downstairs in the courtyard, and the rooftop terrace is where guests sit in the late afternoon, looking over the tin and tile roofs of the old town to the water. The restaurant and the rooftop serve soft drinks only, which is a long standing rule of the house.

It suits the traveller who wants to be inside the old town rather than beside it. Forodhani Gardens and the night food stalls are about five minutes away, the Old Fort three, the Hamamni baths six, the Anglican cathedral and the former slave market about eight, and the Darajani market twelve. Boats to Prison Island and the Safari Blue sandbanks leave from the beach a few minutes from the door, and the drive down to Jozani Forest for the red colobus takes about an hour. Most guests stay two or three nights, either side of a safari or before moving on to a beach on the east or north coast.

Practical things worth knowing. The hotel is about seven and a half kilometres from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, fifteen to twenty minutes by road, and it has its own parking, so a car or taxi reaches the street frontage. Larger vehicles stop short of the building and the staff carry bags through the lanes, which is normal everywhere in Stone Town. The building is on several floors with a lift, but it is an old house and it is not step free. Children are welcome, cots are provided, and the courtyard pool is shallow enough for families.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. The rooftop at the end of the day

The terrace on the top floor looks across the roofs of the old town to the sea. It is the place guests end up between four and seven, when the light goes copper and the muezzins start.

  2. Stone Town on foot from the door

The Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Hamamni baths, the cathedral on the site of the slave market and the Darajani market are all within a fifteen minute walk. A guided morning walk makes sense of the layers before you wander on your own.

  3. Prison Island and the sandbanks

Boats leave from the beach a few minutes from the hotel for the giant tortoises on Changuu, and for the reefs and sandbanks further out. Half a day is enough for either.

  4. Jozani Forest and the red colobus

About an hour south of the town, the only protected forest on the island holds the Zanzibar red colobus, which is found nowhere else. Mornings are best.

  5. A spice farm morning

The farms north of the town grow clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, and the tour ends with fruit cut in front of you. It is the oldest excursion on the island and still a good one.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How many rooms does Dhow Palace have?

Thirty, arranged over several floors around two courtyards. The hotel started with sixteen in the original house and roughly doubled in size when a second wing was added in 2005.

Where exactly is it in Stone Town?

On Baghani Street in Shangani, the seaward quarter, just off Kenyatta Road. Forodhani Gardens and the seafront are about five minutes away on foot and the Old Fort about three.

How do I get there from the airport?

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is about seven and a half kilometres away, fifteen to twenty minutes by road. Cars and taxis reach the hotel frontage and there is parking. The hotel will send a car for 15 USD per group, paid at the property.

What is included in the rate?

The room for the guests the price covers, breakfast daily, government taxes and VAT, wifi, air conditioning, the courtyard pool and the rooftop terrace. Lunch and dinner are not included and are arranged at the hotel.

What do I pay at the hotel?

The Zanzibar infrastructure tax of 4 USD per person per day is collected on arrival. Anything you order outside breakfast, laundry, excursions and the airport transfer are also settled at the property.

Are families with children welcome?

Yes. Children of any age are welcome, cots are provided, and the triple rooms take three guests in one room. Children under six sharing their parents room are free where the room has space for them.

What is served at the restaurant and on the rooftop?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, and soft drinks only. It is a house rule the building has kept for many years, and it is one of the reasons some guests choose it.

Is there a lift?

Yes, there is a lift, but the house is old and arranged around courtyards with stairs between levels, so it is not step free. Tell us if you need a room on a lower floor and we will ask for one.

Is there a pool?

Yes, a swimming pool in the central courtyard, shallow enough for children, and a terrace on the roof with seating and views over the old town to the sea.

When is the best time to stay?

The hotel is open all year. June to October and December to February are the driest. The long rains fall in April and May, when the town is quieter and still perfectly walkable between showers.

How many nights should I plan in Stone Town?

Two or three. That gives a morning on a guided walk, an afternoon for Prison Island or a spice farm, and an evening at Forodhani, with a day left over for Jozani Forest on the way to a beach.

Can I leave bags while I go to the beach or on safari?

Yes, the hotel stores luggage, which is useful if you are splitting a trip between Stone Town and the coast and coming back for a flight.
