About

About Pemba Paradise Beach Resort.

Pemba Paradise sits at Makangale, near the far northern point of Pemba, about an hour and a half by road from the island's airport at Wawi. The resort is built low in a tropical garden of palms and bougainvillea that runs down to a wide stretch of sand, and nothing on the property stands above the tree line. Northern Pemba is farmland and forest rather than resort strip: the road in passes clove plantations and cassava plots and skirts the edge of the Ngezi forest, and the nearest village is a short walk along the beach.

The draw here is the water. The Pemba channel drops steeply a short way offshore, which is why the island has a reputation among divers that its size does not explain. The clearest months run from July to October, when the southeast wind eases and visibility opens up, and January and February are hot, dry and also good. April and May bring the long rains and are the wettest weeks of the year on this coast. Inland, the Ngezi forest holds animals found nowhere else on earth: the Pemba flying fox, the Pemba scops owl, the Pemba white eye and the Pemba green pigeon, all within half an hour of the resort.

There are twenty one rooms in four categories. Standard rooms face the garden and have a four poster bed under a mosquito net. Deluxe Garden rooms are larger, sit on the ground floor and are arranged so two can be opened into one another for a family. Ocean Sea View rooms take the upper floor for the view, and the three Family Sea View rooms are the biggest in the house, with a double and two single beds. Every room has air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a safe, tea and coffee things and a terrace or balcony. Outside there is a swimming pool with loungers, an open sided restaurant beside it, a second lounge down on the beach, a spa that does massage by appointment, and a dive centre operating from the property.

It suits divers first, and the resort is set up for them, but it works just as well for a family that wants a quiet fortnight by the sea, or for a couple adding a week of coast to a safari. It is not a place for people who want several restaurants and a programme of entertainment. The pleasure of it is the opposite: a short walk to the water, a long lunch, and an island that has not yet been rebuilt for visitors.

Getting here takes a connection. There is no non stop flight from Kilimanjaro, so guests fly Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar, then Zanzibar to Pemba in about thirty minutes, and drive north for about an hour and a half. The road is sealed for most of the way and rough over the last stretch. The resort arranges the transfer.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. Dive and Stay

The resort builds its diving around whole stays rather than single boat trips, from three nights with four dives up to a week with fourteen, with dinner and the airport transfers folded in. Tell us the dates and how many of your party dive, and we will price one.

  2. Diving the Pemba channel

The wall starts close to shore and drops into deep water, which is why divers travel to Pemba at all. The centre on the property runs boat dives daily for certified divers and teaches beginners in the pool first.

  3. Ngezi forest and the northern point

Half an hour away, a patch of forest that holds the Pemba flying fox and the Pemba scops owl, and beyond it the cast iron lighthouse at Ras Kigomasha, built in 1904 and still working. A half day with a guide.

  4. Misali island

A full day: the drive south to the Chake Chake coast, then about an hour by boat. White sand, a conservation area around the reef and some of the best snorkelling on the island.

  5. Tumbe fish market and the spice plots

The morning catch comes in at Tumbe, about forty five minutes east. The spice plots nearby will walk you through cloves, nutmeg and whatever fruit is ripe that week. Half a day.

  6. Sandbank and snorkelling

The boat runs out to a sandbank that appears at low tide and disappears again a few hours later. Snorkelling on the way out, then nothing to do but sit on it.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How many rooms does Pemba Paradise Beach Resort have?

Twenty one, in four categories: eight Standard, five Deluxe Garden, five Ocean Sea View and three Family Sea View. It is a small property and it stays quiet even when it is full.

How do guests get there from Kilimanjaro?

There is no non stop flight from Kilimanjaro to Pemba. The route is Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar, about one hour fifteen minutes, then Zanzibar to Pemba on a light aircraft, about thirty minutes, then about one hour thirty minutes north by road to Makangale. Allow about four and a half hours door to door.

When is the best time to visit?

July to October is the strongest window: dry, calm and with the clearest water for diving and snorkelling. January and February are hot and dry and also good. April and May bring the long rains and are the wettest weeks on this coast.

Is the resort open all year?

Yes. The contract prices every night of the year with no closure period, including April and May when several other properties on the island shut.

Who runs the diving?

Pemba Dive Center operates from the resort as a separate business. Boat dives run daily for certified divers and beginners start with pool training. The Pemba channel wall is a short boat ride offshore.

Are families with children welcome?

Yes. There is no minimum age, the pool is open to all ages and the three Family Sea View rooms take four people. Two Deluxe Garden rooms can also be opened into one another. Children under fourteen are charged at half the additional person rate.

What is included in the rate?

Accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis with breakfast each morning, government tourist taxes and hotel service charges, plus use of the pool and wifi. Lunch and dinner are charged separately at thirty US dollars per person per meal.

What is charged on arrival or at check out?

An infrastructure tax of two US dollars per person per night, children included, is settled directly with the resort when you check out. It is not in the room rate and it cannot be prepaid.

Is there wifi and is the power reliable?

Wifi is free across the property and is strongest in the public areas. Power comes from the island supply and can be interrupted, so it is worth packing a power bank if you rely on a camera or a phone.

What is the beach like?

Wide sand directly in front of the property, with access straight from the garden. As on most of this coast the tide moves a long way out, and at low water parts of the shore are used for seaweed farming, which is worth knowing if you want to swim at any hour. The pool covers the low tide.

What is there to do besides the beach?

Ngezi forest and the Kigomasha lighthouse are both within about half an hour and make a good half day. Further afield there is the fish market at Tumbe, the spice plots, Misali island for snorkelling and Kojani island for its potters. The tour desk arranges all of them.

Can the resort arrange airport transfers?

Yes. A shuttle meets flights at Pemba airport and runs north to Makangale, taking up to four guests with luggage in one vehicle. It is booked through the resort and charged separately from the room rate.

Do I need travel insurance to visit?

Yes. Visitors to Zanzibar must hold the Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per person for the whole stay, bought online at visitzanzibar.go.tz before arrival. Tanzania residents are exempt. If you enter mainland Tanzania first for a safari, the mainland policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of our quote.
