About

About this experience.

On the east coast of Zanzibar, mornings begin with the sound of the lagoon and the call to prayer drifting from a village mosque. The light comes up pale over the reef, the sand is cool, and there is nothing at all to rush for. After a week of pre-dawn wake-up calls on safari, this is where many guests finally slow down: a stretch on the veranda, a long breakfast, a spa treatment in the heat of the afternoon, and an early night.

A wellness stay on Zanzibar is less a programme than a rhythm. The east coast, from Pongwe and Kiwengwa in the north to Paje and Jambiani in the south, is the calmer side of the island, with long beaches and a steady sea breeze. Several of our partner properties have their own spas: the Raha Spa at TOA Hotel & Spa in Pongwe, the Maji Spa at Pongwe Bay Resort, and the spa at Kasha Boutique Hotel in Matemwe, where every room has a private pool. On Pemba, Pemba Paradise Beach Resort also has a spa, in a far quieter setting.

What it is really like: gentle, unstructured and restorative. Movement can mean yoga or stretching on the beach or a deck, a long walk at low tide, or paddling the lagoon. Not every property runs scheduled yoga classes, so we confirm in writing what is on offer for your dates before you book rather than assuming. Beyond the hotel, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar's only national park, offers quiet forest walks and the chance to see the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found only on Unguja. In the late afternoon, Paje's shallow lagoon draws kitesurfers, which is lovely to watch even if you never pick up a kite.

The honest caveats. The east coast tides are large, so swimming depends on the time of day. Seaweed can wash up in some seasons. Wind is constant on the east coast, wonderful in the heat but not ideal if you want a glassy sea. Wellness facilities vary a great deal, from full spas to a single treatment room, and we will tell you which is which. The long rains in April and May are the weakest time to come.

Zanzibar is around 99 percent Muslim, and the rhythm of the island reflects it: the call to prayer from village mosques and a slower pace during Ramadan, when visitors are asked to dress modestly away from the beach and be discreet about eating in public. Many guests find this adds to the calm rather than limiting it. We confirm dietary needs, including halal, with each property in writing.

On your quote, nights, spa treatments, classes and transfers are each separate lines, so you can build a wellness stay with as much or as little structure as you like. It suits travellers recovering from a busy safari, couples, solo travellers, and anyone who wants their beach days to leave them rested rather than entertained.

How to structure it

Building it into your trip.

Allow at least four nights, ideally five or six, at a single east coast property rather than moving around. Choose a hotel with its own spa if treatments matter, and ask us to confirm any yoga sessions for your dates. Spend one morning at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park for a forest walk and the red colobus. Fly direct from the Serengeti to Zanzibar so the transition from safari to rest happens in a single day. Spa treatments are listed on your quote as their own lines.

Common questions

Questions, answered.

What is a wellness stay in Zanzibar?

A slow, restorative few days on the island's quieter east coast: spa treatments, gentle movement such as yoga or beach walks, good food, early nights and plenty of nothing. It works best as the second half of a Tanzania trip, when the early starts of safari give way to the rhythm of the tide.

Which properties have a spa?

Among our partners, TOA Hotel & Spa in Pongwe has the Raha Spa, Pongwe Bay Resort has the Maji Spa, Kasha Boutique Hotel in Matemwe has a spa alongside private pools for every room, and Pemba Paradise Beach Resort on Pemba also has one. Facilities differ in size, so we match the property to how much you want to use it.

Is yoga available?

At some properties and on some dates. Not every hotel runs a scheduled class, and offerings change through the year, so we confirm in writing what will be available during your stay before you book. If yoga is central to your trip, tell your Expert early and we plan around it.

Is Zanzibar suitable for Muslim travellers?

Very much so. Around 99 percent of Zanzibaris are Muslim, and the call to prayer is part of daily life. We confirm halal and other dietary requirements with each property in writing, and our quotes never include drinks packages. During Ramadan the island is quieter by day and visitors are asked to dress modestly away from the beach.

When is the best time for a wellness stay?

June to October and December to February offer the most reliable weather. The long rains in April and May, and to a lesser extent November, bring heavy showers. The east coast is breezy all year, which keeps the heat comfortable.
