The east coast is Zanzibar's quiet-luxury strip — a long ribbon of brilliant white sand and shallow, glowing lagoons sheltered by a distant reef, running from Matemwe in the north down through Pongwe and Kiwengwa to Paje in the south. Here the ocean breathes with the tide: at high water the lagoon fills to a warm turquoise mirror; at low water it withdraws to reveal sandbars, starfish and the slow, graceful work of the seaweed farmers. Plan your swims around the water, or simply slip into your pool and let the view do the rest — this is the coast's honest rhythm, and part of its beauty. Offshore lies the reason divers and snorkellers come: Mnemba Atoll, reached from Matemwe, where turtles, dolphins and more than four hundred species of reef fish patrol some of the clearest water in the archipelago. Further south at Paje, steady cross-shore winds have turned a fishing village into a kitesurfing capital, while the lodges in between trade in barefoot privacy — thatched villas, plunge pools, and long empty beaches at dawn.
