About
Mambo Paradise sits at Matemwe Kigomani, at the top of the long sand strip that runs up the north east shoulder of Unguja. It is a white building of two storeys under makuti thatch, set back from the water by a garden and a salt water pool, with the reef lying about a kilometre offshore and Mnemba Atoll a short boat ride north. The local fish market is a few steps away, which is not a detail the property mentions by accident: the kitchen buys there, and what you are served at seven in the evening came out of the water that morning.
The rhythm of the place follows the tide rather than a programme. At low water the lagoon empties out for several hundred metres and the village walks out onto it to collect seaweed and octopus, and you can walk out with them. At high water the boats come back in past the front of the hotel. Snorkelling trips to Mnemba, and diving with the operators along the Matemwe strip, are arranged at the property and leave from the beach in front of it. The reef fish are the draw, and between June and October the water is usually clear enough that you can see the bottom from the boat.
There are seven rooms in total, all of them doubles, and three of them look straight out at the ocean. Each has air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, a fridge and a safe, and a mosquito net over the bed. Four of the seven can take an extra bed when a family needs it. The restaurant and the terrace sit on the first floor so that you eat with the water in front of you, and the pool has a shallow end for small children. There is no reception desk culture here and no entertainment programme, the scale of the place is closer to a guest house than a resort, and that is deliberate.
It suits couples who want the coast without a resort around them, families who want somewhere small enough that the staff learn their names in a day, and anyone adding four or five quiet nights to the end of a safari. It suits people who like eating seafood and being in the water. It suits less well anyone who wants a spa, a gym, a kids club or a choice of restaurants, because none of those exist here. Katarzyna Werner, who owns and runs it, guides the island excursions herself, so a day out is a day with the owner rather than with a contracted driver.
Getting here is straightforward. Matemwe is about 52 kilometres from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport outside Stone Town, which is a drive of roughly an hour and a quarter on a good run, longer if Stone Town is busy. The property runs the transfer in its own vehicle when you ask for it. Most guests coming off a northern circuit safari fly Arusha to Zanzibar and drive up from the airport the same afternoon.
Signature experiences
The atoll lies a short boat ride north of the property and the reef around it is the best known on this side of the island. Boats leave from the beach in front of the hotel and the trip takes a morning.
Twice a day the lagoon in front of Matemwe drains for several hundred metres. The village walks out to collect seaweed, octopus and shells, and guests are welcome to walk out with them.
The kitchen buys at the village fish market a few steps from the door. Lobster, octopus, squid and reef fish are cooked simply and served on the first floor terrace with the water in front of you.
Katarzyna Werner takes guests out herself in the property vehicle, to Stone Town, the spice farms or the Jozani forest. It is an unhurried day with someone who has lived on the island for years.

Location & access
Zanzibar East Coast
About 3 hours in total. A scheduled flight of roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International or from Arusha to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport at Zanzibar, then a road transfer of about 1 hour 15 minutes and 52 km north east to Matemwe. The property runs the transfer in its own vehicle on request.
Not a sensible road trip. Zanzibar is an island, so a guest coming from Kilimanjaro International drives about 8 hours to Dar es Salaam and then takes the ferry to Stone Town, roughly 2 hours, before the 1 hour 15 minute drive up to Matemwe. Almost everyone flies instead.

Frequently asked
Seven, all of them doubles. Three of the seven look straight out at the ocean and four of them can take an extra bed. The whole property fits at most fourteen guests in the published rooms, which is why it feels closer to a guest house than a hotel.

Yes. Children under 2 stay free. Four of the seven rooms can take an extra bed for an older child, which is charged per night and arranged with the property. The pool has a shallow end.
June to October is the long dry window and the water is usually at its clearest for snorkelling. December to February is hot and bright and takes in the festive weeks. The long rains run roughly late March to early June, which is the quietest and cheapest stretch of the year.
Both. There is a salt water pool in the garden with a shallow end, and the beach is directly in front of the property. At low tide the lagoon drains out for several hundred metres, which is part of the character of this coast.
Seafood led, because the village fish market is a few steps away and the kitchen buys there each morning. Lobster, octopus, squid and reef fish are the regulars, cooked simply and served on the first floor terrace.
Yes to both. Every room has air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, a fridge and a safe, and WiFi reaches the rooms and the public areas.
Yes. Snorkelling trips to Mnemba leave from the beach in front of the hotel, and the owner guides island days to Stone Town, the spice farms and the Jozani forest in the property vehicle. All of these are paid separately.
Quiet, green and warm. Through the long rains from late March to early June the showers tend to be heavy and short rather than all day, the sea is warmer and the whole coast empties out. It is the cheapest time to come and the easiest time to have the place to yourself.
We have no record of a seasonal closure and the property has not told us of one, so we are treating it as open all year. If you are booking deep into the long rains, let your Expert confirm the dates with the property first.
