Why the $295 crater descent fee matters most
The descent fee is charged per vehicle, per descent, not per person. That single detail decides most of what a crater day costs per head. Split between two travellers in one 4WD it is $147.50 each; across six it is under $50 each. Together with the daily motor vehicle permit, it is where the size of your party makes a real difference.
It is also why a second crater day roughly doubles the government cost: you pay the $70.80 adult entry again and the $295 descent again. Most itineraries take one crater day and spend extra nights in the Serengeti, where the wildlife density and space usually justify the time more than a repeat descent.

It is a separate NCAA fee charged per vehicle, per descent into the crater floor, on top of the daily entry fee. It is the single largest line-item spike on a Northern Circuit safari. Because it is charged per vehicle rather than per person, a larger party in your private vehicle lowers it sharply per head: split between two travellers it is $147.50 each, and across six it is under $50 each.
How much is Ngorongoro entry for children?
Children aged 5 to 15 pay $23.60 per day for entry, against $70.80 for an adult, and $11.80 per night for the overnight concession, against $59.00 for an adult. Children under 5 are generally exempt. The ages and rates are set by the NCAA, not by us, and we pass them through at cost.
Is the crater descent fee charged per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, per visit. Like the daily motor vehicle permit, it gets cheaper per head the more of you travel together in your private 4WD, so a family or small group brings the cost per person of the $295 fee right down.
Do you pay the entry fee again for a second crater day?
Yes.
