Why the $295 crater descent fee matters most
The descent fee is charged per vehicle, per descent, not per person. That single detail decides most of what a crater day costs per head. Split between two travellers sharing one 4WD it is $147.50 each; across six it is under $50 each. It is the one Ngorongoro fee where sharing a vehicle makes a real difference.
It is also why a second crater day roughly doubles the government cost: you pay the $70.80 adult entry again and the $295 descent again. Most itineraries take one crater day and spend extra nights in the Serengeti, where the wildlife density and space usually justify the time more than a repeat descent.
