Serengeti or Ngorongoro?
The short answer
Do both if you can. The Ngorongoro Crater gives you the densest wildlife in Tanzania and the best chance of black rhino in a single day. The Serengeti gives you space, big cats and the Great Migration across several days. If you must choose, the Crater wins on guaranteed density in limited time, the Serengeti on scale and the migration.
They are the two icons of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, and they are often set against each other online. In practice they answer different questions. Here is how they really compare, and how we sequence them.

How we sequence them
The Crater as one big day. A single descent covers the caldera floor, so we usually give the Ngorongoro Crater one night, on the rim or in nearby Karatu, and one full day down on the floor. That is enough to work the whole crater and take your best shot at black rhino.
The Serengeti as several. The Serengeti is too large and too varied for a day trip. Three nights or more lets us place you in the right zone for your dates, central for year-round big cats, the north from July to October for the Mara River crossings, or Ndutu from January to March for the calving. On the way through. The Crater sits between Arusha and the Serengeti, so a classic drive route takes them in order: Tarangire, then the Ngorongoro Crater, then up into the Serengeti. That way neither park is a detour, and you build from the gateway parks to the main event.

Should I visit the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater?
Most itineraries do both, because they offer very different things. The Ngorongoro Crater delivers the densest wildlife in Tanzania and your best chance of black rhino in a single day on the caldera floor. The Serengeti is vast open plains and the Great Migration, and rewards several days across its zones. If you truly must choose, pick the Crater for guaranteed density in limited time, and the Serengeti for space, big cats and the migration.
Can you see the Big Five in the Serengeti?
You can reliably see four of the five: lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo. Black rhino are rare and shy in the Serengeti. For rhino, the Ngorongoro Crater is far more reliable, holding one of the few accessible populations in Tanzania.
How many days do you need for each?
The Ngorongoro Crater is a one night, one descent park. A single full day on the floor covers it well. The Serengeti rewards three nights or more, so you can reach the right zone for the season and settle into a rhythm of morning and afternoon game drives.
Is the Ngorongoro Crater worth visiting?
Yes. Nowhere else in Tanzania packs as much wildlife into as small an area, and it is the most reliable place for black rhino. Bear in mind the crater floor draws every vehicle in the area, so it can feel busy, and there is a $295 per vehicle Crater Service Fee for each descent on top of the entry fee.
Which is more expensive, the Serengeti or Ngorongoro?
Overall the Serengeti costs more, driven by remoteness and higher lodge rates, especially in the northern zones during the river crossings. The Ngorongoro Crater is lighter on lodging because it is usually one night, but it adds the $295 per vehicle descent fee, which can surprise people.
