A Tanzania family safari costs less per child than most families expect, because children aged 5 to 15 pay sharply reduced park fees and children under 5 are generally exempt. Government fees for a family of four on a typical 3-night Ngorongoro and Serengeti core come to about $1,416, and a realistic all-in figure with family lodging and a private vehicle is roughly $9,000 to $16,000 for the family for a week at comfort to premium tiers, before international flights.
The biggest driver of a family's cost is lodging, not park fees, and the fees that are fixed get cheaper per head for children. Below are the real 2026 child and adult rates we price with, a fully itemised family example, and honest modelled lodging bands.
Child vs adult park fees in 2026
Children aged 5 to 15 pay a reduced rate at every park; children under 5 are generally exempt. Entry is charged per person per 24-hour day; concession is charged per person per night slept inside the park.

A 3-night core in peak season: one Ngorongoro crater day with a rim night, then two nights in the central Serengeti. Two children aged 5 to 15, everyone in one shared 4WD. Government fees only, whole family, from the live 2026 database.

How much do children save on park fees?
A great deal. In the Serengeti a child's entry fee is $23.60 against an adult's $82.60 in peak season, roughly a 71 percent reduction, and a child's concession fee is $11.80 against $59.00 to $70.80. In Tarangire a child enters for $17.70 against $53.10 to $59.00. Over a week of park days those reductions add up to hundreds of dollars per child.
Is a private vehicle worth it for a family safari?
Usually yes. A family of four almost always takes a private 4WD, which keeps everyone together and lets the guide adjust the pace to younger travellers. Because the vehicle fee and the $295 Ngorongoro crater descent fee are charged per vehicle rather than per person, a family already spreads those fixed costs across four people, so the per-head premium for going private is smaller than most families expect.
What ages count as a child for park fees?
Children aged 5 to 15 pay the reduced child rate at TANAPA parks and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Children under 5 are generally exempt from park fees. From 16, travellers pay the full adult rate. Bring passports as proof of age, since the fee is set by date of birth at the gate.
