About

Nimali Mara sits on a rocky kopje in the northern Serengeti, ten minutes from the Mara River crossings that anchor the migration's most dramatic act. The camp is contemporary in design — glass-fronted suites that blend into the kopje, an infinity pool with uninterrupted plains views, and an architectural restraint that reads as confident rather than understated.

The Mara River crossings between July and October are the headline. Columns of wildebeest and zebra arrive at the river's bank in their tens of thousands, hesitate, and then commit to the crossing through crocodile-infested water. From the kopje at Nimali Mara, the staging grounds on the southern side of the river are visible across the plains, an unusual vantage point that lets guests track the herds' approach before the crossing actually begins. Outside the migration window the camp draws on the region's year-round resident wildlife: lion prides on the granite kopjes, leopards along the river bend, large elephant herds in the rolling woodlands east of the river.

The camp runs eight tented suites in three configurations: Double Tented Suite, Twin Tented Suite, and the Mara Tented Suite (the family configuration, a per-unit room for parties of up to four). Each suite is on a private deck with the kopje view. Interiors are modern and warm, with king or twin beds, en-suite bathrooms, and a separate dressing area. The main mess overlooks the plains and the infinity pool. Dining is gourmet and notably halal-certified, an unusual offering in the Tanzanian safari sector.

Nimali Mara works best for honeymooners drawn by the architecture and the privacy of the kopje setting, photographers chasing the migration crossings, and luxury travellers who want the most photographable property in the northern Serengeti without the saturated branding of the largest operators. Children are welcome but the camp's tone leans adult.

Access is by Cessna flight from Arusha to Kogatende airstrip (1hr 30min including the road transfer JRO to Arusha Airport), then a 30-minute game-drive transfer to camp. Nimali's vehicle meets guests at Kogatende.

Signature experiences

  • Mara River crossings (Jul to Oct)

Ten minutes from camp to the river escarpment. The migration's most cinematic event, with the kopje vantage point letting guests track herds staging on the southern bank before the crossing commits.

  • Infinity pool and kopje setting

The pool's edge looks east across the rolling plains; sundowner hour from the deck is one of the great views in the northern Serengeti.

  • Lobo and Bologonja game drives

45min to 1hr north of camp. Less-visited country with resident lion prides, leopards on the river bend, and the Bologonja springs that pull wildlife outside the migration window.

  • Cultural visit

A guided visit to a Maasai or Kuria community on the conservation area's northern fringe.

  • Hot-air balloon safari

Dawn flights over the northern Serengeti, booked through a regional operator. Champagne breakfast on landing.
