The boat cuts its engine off Kilindoni and the sea goes quiet. A shadow the length of a minibus moves just below the surface, its back spotted like a night sky, its wide mouth open to the plankton. Then you slip in beside it, and for a long, slow minute there is nothing but the hum of the water and the great tail sweeping past. If you want to swim with whale sharks in Tanzania, Mafia Island is the place, and the whale shark season, from October to March, is the window when these gentle giants typically gather close to shore.

We begin with one night in Arusha after the long flight into Kilimanjaro, then two flights, via Dar es Salaam, carry you south to Mafia. It is a small, unhurried island, with sandy lanes, coconut palms and dhows drawn up on the beach at low tide. The whale shark swim goes out with a marine park guide and, like every excursion here, is an optional extra run by your lodge. Beyond the sharks, Mafia Island Marine Park diving and snorkelling take you over coral gardens bright with anemones and clownfish in the sheltered water of Chole Bay. Across the bay, the Chole Island ruins stand in the shade of strangler figs, nineteenth century merchant houses with roots running through their walls and fruit bats stirring overhead at dusk. Along the shore, mangrove channels shelter kingfishers that flash blue.

Sightings are never certain, but the best chance typically falls between November and February. This trip runs only in the whale shark season, and Mafia's lodges also close from Easter to the end of May.
