February in Ndutu is the calving heart of the great wildebeest migration. Half a million calves drop over a five-week window on the short-grass plains, and the predator response is as concentrated as anywhere in Africa. You hear it before you see it: the low rumble of half a million animals on the move, the bones cracking as a lioness opens a fresh kill at first light, the whoop of hyena clans staking ground around a herd. This is the Tanzania calving season safari that the rest of the year cannot give you.
