August and September on the Mara river are the most photographed seven minutes in African wildlife. The herds mass on the south bank, hesitate, edge in, then break in panic across the crocodile water. You feel the impact through the truck before you see the first wildebeest hit the surface. Three nights at Kogatende gives you the time the Mara river crossings actually deserve — one night is gambling, two is hopeful, three is when the photographers in your party start to smile.

The route opens with an Arusha acclimation night and a single Tarangire night to start the safari softly. Two Seronera nights work you west across the central Serengeti plains. Three nights at Kogatende put you on the Mara itself for the August-to-September crossings, with the Nile crocodiles holding the same lines they've held for generations and the Mara Triangle lion prides tracking the herds night by night. A closing Crater day seals the safari with the Big Five inside the caldera.
