About

About this experience.

You are collected from camp while the stars are still out, and the launch site is all noise and heat: the roar of the burners, crew shouting, a fabric envelope the size of a house slowly lifting off the grass. Then you climb into the basket, the ground lets go, and suddenly everything is quiet. The sun comes up over the plains, the balloon's shadow slides across a herd of buffalo, and you can see the shape of the land in a way no game drive gives you: the drainage lines, the kopjes, the game trails worn into the grass.

Balloon flights in northern Tanzania run in the Serengeti and Tarangire. Our partner, Miracle Experience, flies from Seronera in the central Serengeti all year, and seasonally from Kogatende in the north during the crossing months and from Ndutu in the south during calving, with Tarangire also on its list. Take-off is around six in the morning and you are typically aloft for about an hour. Pilots usually fly at a few hundred metres, dropping lower to skim over animals and rising for the wide view; the operator gives around 900 metres as a usual ceiling. The whole morning, from pick-up to return, takes around five hours.

What it is really like: gentle, cold at first and then warm from the burners, and surprisingly silent between burns. You stand for the whole flight. The landing can be a bump and a tilt, which the crew brief you for. Breakfast is set out in the bush where you land, and the crew drive you back to rejoin your guide, so the rest of the day carries on as normal. Wildlife from above is unpredictable; on some flights you drift over hippo pools and lions, on others it is mostly the landscape. Over Kogatende in season or Ndutu in February, the odds of seeing the herds below you are good.

The honest caveats. Weather decides. If the wind or rain is wrong, the flight is cancelled on the morning and fully refunded, which is why we recommend booking it early in a multi-night stay so there is a fallback day. Children must meet the operator's minimum age, which is six or seven depending on operator, and pregnant guests cannot fly. Passengers above a set weight may pay a supplement. Cancellations close to the date are charged on a sliding scale, from 50 percent within two weeks to the full amount inside 48 hours.

On price, both Serengeti operators currently quote around 599 US dollars per person in the Serengeti and 550 in Tarangire, including the concession fee, VAT and breakfast, and one operator has announced a rise from January 2027. On your Savannah & Sands quote the balloon is its own line beside your park fees and lodging, so you can see exactly what it adds and decide whether it is worth it for your trip.

It suits first-timers who want a single standout morning, honeymooners (private flights are available), photographers who want the top-down view, and anyone who has done a few game drives and wants to see the Serengeti differently. It is less suited to anyone with a serious fear of heights, though most nervous flyers find the slow, steady movement far calmer than they expected.

How to structure it

Building it into your trip.

Book the balloon for your second or third morning in a park, not the last, so a weather cancellation can be rebooked. In the Serengeti, base yourself at Seronera for a year-round flight, or at Kogatende between June and November or Ndutu between December and March to fly over the herds. In Tarangire it works well as part of a two or three night stay. Plan a lighter afternoon after flying, as the start is early. One flight per trip is plenty for most guests.

Common questions

Questions, answered.

How much does a balloon safari cost in Tanzania?

Operators currently quote around 599 US dollars per person in the Serengeti and around 550 in Tarangire, including the concession fee, VAT and a bush breakfast. One operator has published higher rates from January 2027. On Savannah & Sands the balloon always appears as its own line on your quote, so you can see its cost separately from park fees and lodging.

Where can I fly?

In the central Serengeti around Seronera all year; in the northern Serengeti at Kogatende during the crossing season, roughly June to November; over the Ndutu plains during calving, roughly December to March; and in Tarangire. We match the launch site to where you are staying, because pick-up is before dawn.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes. Operators set it at six or seven years old, and some require younger children to fly with a responsible adult. Pregnant guests cannot fly, and there is a weight supplement above a set limit. Tell your Expert the ages of everyone travelling and we confirm the operator's rules in writing before booking.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The pilot decides on the morning. If conditions are unsafe the flight is cancelled and refunded in full. That is why we book balloons early in your stay, so there is a second morning available. Cancellations you make yourself are charged on a sliding scale that reaches the full amount within 48 hours of the flight.

What should I wear and bring?

Layers. It is cold before sunrise and warm under the burners. Wear closed shoes, a hat that will not blow away and nothing loose. Bring a camera with a mid-range zoom; a very long lens is awkward in a basket. Bags are kept small, so leave anything you do not need with your guide.
