Twenty four adults only rooms in a coconut garden, looking out at Mnemba
About
Dream's Bay sits at Kigomani, the northern end of the long Matemwe strip, on the north east shoulder of Unguja. It is small: twenty four rooms in four single storey blocks, set back in a coconut garden behind a wall that gives away nothing from the lane. You come through it into palms, a pool facing the water, and a covered terrace where breakfast is laid out. Mnemba lies low on the horizon straight out from the sand, close enough that you watch the snorkelling boats leave for it after breakfast. The property takes adults only, eighteen and over, and the quiet that comes with that is the thing guests mention first.
Mornings here follow the tide rather than the clock. Matemwe sits behind a fringing reef, so at low water the sea pulls a long way back across the flats and you walk out over sand, seagrass and rock pools instead of swimming. A few hours later it is back and the lagoon is warm and flat. Reef shoes are worth packing and reception keeps the week's tide table. The pool covers the hours in between. The beach itself is public and the hotel manages a stretch of it, which means loungers and towels but also, now and then, someone walking the sand with carvings to sell. The sand is wide and white, and the walking at first light, when the water is out and the light is still low, is the best hour of the day.
Food comes from one kitchen on the terrace: a breakfast buffet, and dinner from a set menu brought to the table, with a Zanzibari evening once a week for guests staying seven nights or more. Vegetarian and gluten free eating is handled without fuss if you say so at breakfast. There is an IKI corner for massages rather than a full spa, no gym, and a snorkel and dive operator working from the beach outside who runs the Mnemba trips. What there is, in abundance, is attention. The staff are the most praised part of the place in every language of review, and the hotel is run at a scale where that is possible.
Be clear about what it is. This is a comfortable four star beach hotel with simple rooms, not a design led retreat, and the guests who come away unhappy are the ones who expected the second. Read it as a quiet, friendly, well run place with a Mnemba view and an unusually good team and it delivers that every time. It suits couples and honeymooners who want calm, snorkellers heading out to the atoll, and anyone coming off a mainland safari who wants to stop moving for a week. It does not suit families, guests who need to swim at any hour, anyone needing step free access, or anyone who wants nightlife.
Signature experiences
The atoll sits a short ride off this stretch of coast and the boats leave from the sand in front of the hotel. Reef fish, turtles and often dolphins on the way out. Nobody lands on the island itself, which is private.
At the bottom of the tide the sea withdraws across the flats and you can walk out a long way over sand, seagrass and rock pools, past the plots where the village women farm seaweed. Best at first light.
Once a week, for guests staying seven nights or more, the kitchen cooks a Zanzibari dinner instead of the set menu. Coconut, tamarind, cardamom and whatever came off the boats that morning.
A small treatment corner rather than a spa, for massages, facials and henna, booked at reception and settled on departure.

Location & access
Zanzibar East Coast
Kilimanjaro International to Zanzibar in about 1 hour 20 minutes, then about 1 hour 15 minutes by road to Matemwe. Zanzibar is the island's only airport and there is no airstrip closer to the hotel.
There is no road journey worth making from Kilimanjaro. Fly Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar, about 1 hour 20 minutes with several departures a day, then drive about 60 km north east across the island, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, the last stretch on an unmade lane.

Frequently asked
At Kigomani, the northern end of the Matemwe strip on the north east coast of Unguja. From Zanzibar airport it is roughly sixty kilometres and about an hour and a quarter by road. The last stretch is an unmade lane and drivers who do not know the property often miss it, so book the transfer through the hotel rather than taking a taxi on arrival.
January, February, June, July, August, September, October and December are the driest and brightest. The long rains fall in April and May, when the hotel is at its quietest. March and November carry shorter rains that usually pass in an afternoon.
Half board: a breakfast buffet and a set menu dinner every evening, plus the pool, the loungers and towels, wifi and all applicable government taxes. Lunch and anything not named in the plan is charged at the hotel.
A local infrastructure tax of 5 USD per person per night. On 24 December 2026 a compulsory Christmas Eve dinner of 88 USD per person applies, and on 31 December 2026 a compulsory New Year Eve dinner of 117.33 USD per person. Both are itemised in your trip price rather than left as a surprise.
No. The hotel takes adults only, eighteen and over, with no exceptions in its contract. If you are travelling with children, ask us for one of the family properties on the same coast.
Not off the beach. Matemwe sits behind a reef and the tide runs a long way out, so sea swimming works around the higher half of the tide and shifts by about an hour each day. The pool faces the water and covers the rest. If swimming on demand matters, the north tip around Nungwi and Kendwa behaves differently.
Snorkelling and diving at Mnemba, which lies a short boat ride off this stretch of coast, turtle snorkelling, dhow trips, kitesurfing when the wind is up, deep sea fishing, and walks out to the seaweed plots at low tide. Inland, the spice farms, Jozani forest and Stone Town are all day trips.
Yes, free throughout the property, and guests report it works in the rooms as well as the public areas. Mobile coverage on this coast is reasonable.
Twenty four rooms in three categories: Classic looking over the garden and pool, Sea View with a balcony angled at the water, and Sea Front facing the ocean straight on. All have one double bed under a mosquito net, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a safe and a terrace or balcony. They are simple and well kept rather than large or designed.
Not really. The property has level changes and stairs between its areas and its own operators describe it as unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility. Tell us before you book and we will check what can be arranged.
The contract sets a minimum of three nights, and seven nights over the festive window from 23 December to 6 January. Five to seven nights suits the place: long enough for two or three good tides and a Mnemba morning.
Very quiet. April and May are the long rains and the hotel runs with few guests, which some people love and others find flat. The kitchen and the staffing do not change, but the beach is emptier and the weather less reliable.
What's nearby
A protected reef a short boat ride offshore, known for its snorkelling and diving. Boats leave from the beach in front of the hotel.
A few minutes down the sand. A working fishing and seaweed village, and the clearest view of how this coast makes its living.
About forty five minutes north at the tip of the island, for the dhow yards, the turtle conservation pond and the sun going down over water.
About an hour and a quarter across the island. A UNESCO listed old town of carved doors, market lanes and the old fort, usually taken as a day trip.
About an hour and a quarter south west. Red colobus monkeys, mahogany forest and a mangrove boardwalk.
Inland from Stone Town, about an hour away, where cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla grow. Usually combined with a Stone Town day.
