About

About Blue Oyster Hotel.

Blue Oyster Hotel sits directly on the beach at Jambiani, a fishing village on the south east coast of Zanzibar, about an hour and a half by road from the airport and Stone Town. A German family opened it on Boxing Day 1999 and the second generation runs it now. The buildings are thatched and two storeys high, set in a garden of palms behind the sand, and the whole place faces east, so the sun comes up over the lagoon in front of the rooms.

Jambiani is a tidal coast. Twice a day the sea draws back across a wide reef flat, and the women of the village walk out to tend the seaweed they farm there; at high tide the water comes back up to the beach. The hotel added a swimming pool in 2025, so there is always somewhere to swim, and the beach in front has loungers, umbrellas and towels.

There are eighteen rooms. Sea view rooms of about twenty square metres are upstairs or on the ground floor facing the sea, each with a hand carved Zanzibari king bed under a mosquito net and a balcony or terrace. Budget garden view rooms of about fourteen square metres sit around the courtyard with a queen bed and a small patio. The hotel also sells a private villa with three double rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a large balcony, for up to six. There is no air conditioning, by choice; rooms have ceiling fans, and hot water comes from solar heaters.

Rates are bed and breakfast. The restaurant is upstairs with a view over the lagoon, serves a breakfast buffet and an a la carte lunch and dinner with a menu that changes every second day, and dinner can be added as half board. Massages are given by women from the village, and Kemi Tours, the local operator the hotel works with, runs trips across the island. The hotel was one of the first on Zanzibar certified by Responsible Tourism Tanzania. It suits couples and families who want a simple, friendly beach hotel in a real village rather than a resort.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. Breakfast over the lagoon

The restaurant is upstairs, with tables along the balcony above the water. Dhows sail past in the morning and the colour of the lagoon changes with the tide.

  2. Low tide on the reef flat

When the sea goes out you can walk across the lagoon with the women who farm seaweed there, and come back to the pool or the beach loungers when it returns.

  3. A sunrise balcony

The sea view rooms face east, so the first light comes up over the water in front of the balcony or terrace.

  4. A hotel run with the village

Massages are given by women from Jambiani, the kitchen buys from the village and the hotel farm, and the hotel was one of the first certified by Responsible Tourism Tanzania.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How many rooms does Blue Oyster Hotel have?

Eighteen, split between sea view rooms on the upper floors and simpler garden view rooms around the courtyard. The hotel also has a private villa with three double rooms for up to six guests.

Where is the hotel?

Directly on the beach in Jambiani, a fishing village on the south east coast of Zanzibar. The hotel puts it at about fifty kilometres and an hour and a half by road from Zanzibar airport and from Stone Town.

Is the beach tidal?

Yes. Jambiani sits on a wide lagoon, and at low tide the sea draws back across a reef flat where women from the village farm seaweed. At high tide it comes right up to the beach, and the hotel now has its own pool for the hours in between.

What is included in the rate?

The room and breakfast each morning, Wi Fi, the pool and the beach loungers. Dinner can be added as half board at 30 US dollars per person per day, and lunch is ordered from the menu.

Is there air conditioning?

No, by choice. Every room has a ceiling fan and mosquito net, and the buildings face the sea breeze. Hot water comes from solar heaters.

Can children stay?

The hotel welcomes families and keeps a baby cot and high chair. We are not yet able to price a child in the rooms here, so children cannot be booked at this hotel yet. In the villa children are included in the villa price.

What is the villa like?

A private villa with three double rooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and a large balcony facing the sea, priced as a whole for up to six guests.

What can we do from the hotel?

Swim and walk the lagoon at low tide, take a massage from women from the village, and book trips with Kemi Tours, the local operator the hotel works with, for trips across the island.

What makes the hotel different?

It has been run by the same family since 1999 and was one of the first hotels on Zanzibar certified by Responsible Tourism Tanzania. It recycles grey water on its gardens, composts, grows food on its own farm and works closely with the village.

Is there anything else I must arrange before I travel?

Tanzania requires inbound travel insurance for every visitor from 1 October 2026, 44 US dollars per adult, bought online before you fly. Your Expert will remind you when you book.
