About
Bougainvillea Safari Lodge sits in mature gardens on the western edge of Karatu town, roughly midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. The gardens are the point of the place. Clipped lawns run between flowering borders, palms and Araucaria pines, stone paths thread between the cottages, and a working coffee garden takes up one corner of the property with ten of the rooms standing in it. Reception is a dressed stone building with a carved welcome lintel and a covered verandah lounge. At around 1,500 metres the days are mild and the evenings are properly cold, which is why every room has a fireplace.
This is a base rather than a game property, and the position is the reason to take it. The Loduare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about eighteen minutes west, the shortest run of the Karatu lodges on this side of town. Lake Manyara is around half an hour down the escarpment, Tarangire about two hours southeast, and from December to March the calving herds are out on the Ndutu plains within reach. June to October is the dry season and the steadiest window for the crater. April, May and November are the quiet months and the lowest season here.
The thirty two rooms sit in detached and semi detached cottages, whitewashed render and warm red brick under pitched roofs, each with a raised veranda and steps down onto the lawn. Inside there is a mosquito netted king or twin bed, an open stone fireplace that the staff will light on request, a dressing area, a writing desk, woven reed ceilings and polished floors, and a large bathroom with a shower. Two of the cottages connect so a family can take both. Triples are possible with notice.
Food is the second thing the lodge is known for. One of the two founders is the executive chef and has been cooking here since 2005. Breakfast is a buffet with eggs cooked to order, lunch is a buffet with Tanzanian dishes once a week and packed boxes for guests heading out, and dinner is five courses served at the table. There is a dining room indoors and a shaded terrace over the gardens.
The lodge was founded in 2005 by two Tanzanians, a local farmer and a chef, and is still wholly Tanzanian owned and run, with staff drawn from Karatu and the villages around it. It is the first property of what is now the Bougainvillea Group. Getting here is about three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport, or around two hours forty from Arusha, on tarmac through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu and up the escarpment. Lake Manyara airstrip is about half an hour away by road.
Signature experiences
The Loduare gate is about eighteen minutes west. An early start puts you on the crater floor at first light, among black rhino, lion, elephant and flamingo on Lake Magadi, and back at the lodge for a late afternoon by the fire.
A working coffee garden takes up one corner of the property, with ten of the rooms standing in it. The staff will walk you through it, and out to neighbouring coffee farms, on a guided walk arranged the evening before.
One of the two founders is the executive chef. Dinner is five courses served at the table rather than a buffet line, with produce, dairy and eggs sourced around Karatu, and vegetarian mains cooked to order on request.
The lodge sits on the edge of town rather than behind a gate, so it is one of the few places on the northern circuit where guests can walk into a working Tanzanian town in the late afternoon.
