About
Country Lodge sits in five acres of landscaped garden on the western edge of Karatu, a small farming town in the Ngorongoro highlands roughly midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Garden paths lead between low stone faced cottages set around a swimming pool, with lawns hedged in bougainvillea, tropical planting and mature trees. Beyond the fence the land rolls up towards the coffee hills of Oldeani and the Ngorongoro forest. Birds and butterflies are everywhere in the garden, which is one of the quiet pleasures of staying here.
The lodge was built as the simpler sister to Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, a few hundred metres away, and it is honest about that. The stated aim was Tanzanian hospitality at a price that leaves money for the safari, and the tagline the owners use is everything you need and nothing you do not. It is a staging property: one or two nights before and after the crater, not a destination in itself.
What the position buys is time. The Loduare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about fourteen kilometres west, under half an hour on a good morning, which is as close as anything in Karatu. Lake Manyara is around forty minutes down the escarpment, Tarangire roughly two and a half hours southeast, and from December to March the calving herds are out on the Ndutu plains within reach. June to October is the dry season and the steadiest window for the crater. April, May and November are the quiet months here and the lowest season.
Rooms sit two to a cottage, simply furnished and comfortable. Each has a king or twin bed under mosquito netting, a fireplace the staff will light on request for the cold highland evenings, a dressing area with hanging space, a writing desk, soft lighting, and a bathroom uniquely faced in local stone with a shower. Drinking water and a torch are left in the room, and the hot water is solar heated. The main building holds reception, a high ceilinged lounge with a fireplace and a dining room, with outdoor seating and dining in the garden.
Much of the produce served at the lodge is grown on the property, and the kitchen leans on it. There is a pool, a massage room, a gift shop and a large parking area that makes the lodge easy for safari groups to use. Getting here is about three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport, or around three hours from Arusha, on tarmac through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu and up the escarpment. Lake Manyara airstrip is about forty minutes away by road.
Signature experiences
The Loduare gate is about fourteen kilometres west, under half an hour on a good morning. An early start puts you on the crater floor at first light, among black rhino, lion, elephant and flamingo on Lake Magadi.
Five acres of lawns, bougainvillea hedges and mature trees, and enough birdlife that most guests end up eating slowly. A good place to lose an hour before the drive out.
Much of the produce served here is grown on the property. Dinner is served at the table in the high ceilinged dining room, or outside in the garden when the evening is warm enough.
About forty minutes down the escarpment, and an easy half day from here. Groundwater forest, big elephant herds, baboon troops and flamingo on the lake.

Yes. The rooms can be set as triples with notice, and the garden gives children somewhere to be. Children between six and twelve sharing with adults are charged at a set child rate rather than a share of the adult price.
It is the value tier of its group, built as the simpler sister to Bougainvillea Safari Lodge next door, and it does not pretend otherwise. What you get is a well kept garden property with a pool, fireplaces in the rooms and honest cooking, at a price that leaves more of the budget for the parks.
Wifi reaches the common areas and is best used there rather than in the rooms. The hot water is solar heated, so an early shower after a cold night can take a little patience.
There is a pool, a massage room, a gift shop and five acres of garden to walk, with a lot of birds in it. Most guests use the lodge as a base and spend the day out in the parks.
June to October is the dry season and the most reliable window for the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. December to March brings the calving herds onto the Ndutu plains within reach. April, May and November are the quiet months here and the lowest season.
Yes. There is a large parking area built for safari vehicle arrivals, and the dining room and lounge take a group comfortably. It is one of the easier Karatu properties for a multi vehicle itinerary.
