About
About Karatu.
Karatu sits high on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands, a fertile ribbon of coffee farms, red earth roads and acacia shaded ridgelines just twenty minutes from the Loduare Gate. For travelers planning where to stay near Ngorongoro Crater, this is the answer the guidebooks rarely explain properly: lodges inside the conservation area pay steep concession fees and cling to the cold crater rim, while Karatu offers warm highland evenings, gardens in permanent bloom and some of the most beloved farm lodges in Tanzania, all within easy reach of the crater floor at dawn. The town itself hums with a life that has nothing to do with safari. Iraqw farmers bring produce down from the hills, coffee dries on raised beds, and the Friday market spills across the main road in a blur of color and bargaining. From your lodge you can walk through working plantations, hike to the waterfall at the Elephant Caves on the forested crater slopes, or take a day trip to Lake Eyasi to spend a morning with Hadzabe hunters whose way of life predates agriculture itself. Most itineraries give Karatu a single rushed night. Give it two. Descend into Ngorongoro Crater on your first morning, then spend the second day slowly: a farm to table lunch, a village walk, an afternoon doing absolutely nothing on a verandah above the coffee rows. In a journey built around game drives, Karatu is the place where Tanzania introduces itself as a country, not just a park.
Government fees
No park entry fees apply — this is a town, not a national park. Accommodation in town still carries the standard Tourism Development Levy (TDL) at 1% of net room rate.
