About

About Forest Chem Chem.

Forest Chem Chem is not sold by the room. The camp goes as a whole: three vintage tents and one family tent under the trees on the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, with the rate covering the first eight guests. Whoever books it has the place, the staff and the guiding team to themselves.

That changes what is possible. Because there is no other party to consider, children of any age are welcome, meals happen when your group wants them, and the day can be rebuilt over breakfast without anybody minding. The camp sits in a management area rather than inside the national park, so night game drives are permitted and included, and walking with an armed guide is part of the ordinary routine rather than a special request.

The tents follow the Little Chem Chem style: canvas, campaign furniture, bucket showers heated outside over a fire. The family tent has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and holds two adults with up to two children, included in the camp rate. Full board covers three meals, soft drinks, laundry and internet, and every booking carries a private guide and vehicle each day.

It suits a family travelling together, a group of friends, or two couples who would rather share a camp than a corridor. Game is strongest from June to October, when the Tarangire elephant herds move through the corridor.

Guests generally fly into Chem Chem Airstrip, and the arrival road transfer is included.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How does booking Forest Chem Chem work?

The camp is only sold on an exclusive use basis. One booking takes all four tents, and the published rate covers the first eight guests.

How many people does the camp sleep?

Three vintage tents and one family tent, sleeping up to eight adults and two children. No extra beds are available. A party of nine or ten needs a quote from us directly.

Are children of any age welcome?

Yes. Because the camp is taken privately there is no minimum age, which is unusual for a camp of this standard in this part of Tanzania.

When is the camp open?

It closes through April and May, and is open the rest of the year. June to October are the strongest months for game.

What is included in the rate?

Three meals a day, soft drinks, laundry and internet, a private guide and vehicle each day, and the safari activities in the Burunge Wildlife Management Area. The Tourism Development Levy is included. Conservation and Community fees and national park fees are charged separately.

How do guests reach the camp?

Most guests fly to Chem Chem Airstrip, and the road transfer from the airstrip on arrival is included in the rate. The camp also sits within driving distance of Tarangire and Lake Manyara for those travelling the northern circuit by road.

Is there a minimum stay?

Yes, two nights on all bookings. Three nights suits the area better, since it gives you a full day in the management area and a day in Tarangire National Park.

Is there wifi, and is there a mobile signal?

Wifi is included and reaches the main areas and all four tents, though the speed moves about with the hour and the weather. Treat it as good enough for messages and photographs rather than for a working day.

How is the camp powered?

Power runs through the day and the night, with a backup generator behind it, so there is no fixed charging window to plan around. Tents have lighting, fans, air conditioning, a safe and a hair dryer. Sockets follow the Tanzanian standard, so a British style adapter covers most travellers.

What happens if someone falls ill?

The management team is first aid trained and the camp keeps a kit on site. The nearest doctor is roughly two hours away at Karatu, with full hospital care beyond that in Arusha, so cover matters more here than it does in town. Emergency evacuation insurance can be added to the booking and is listed among the things the rate does not cover.

What is the area like outside the peak months?

The camp closes through April and May. From November into March the short rains green the Burunge management area, the plains game calve and the migrant birds arrive, which makes it the strongest birding window of the year. Grass stands taller then, so general game viewing asks for more patience than it does between June and October.

Do I need travel insurance to visit?

Yes. From 1 October 2026 visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold the government inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per adult and valid for up to 92 days, covering emergency medical care, evacuation, repatriation and lost luggage. Children aged 3 to 17 pay half and infants under 3 are free. It is bought online before you fly or on arrival, and residents of Tanzania and of East African and SADC countries are exempt. If you land in Zanzibar first, the Zanzibar policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of our quote.
