About

About Martina's Retreat.

Martina's Retreat sits one kilometre off the main tarmac road on the northern edge of Karatu, far enough in to be quiet and close enough that a late arrival is easy. White gabled cottages with dark roofs and red brick chimney stacks stand in an arc around a manicured lawn and a long rectangular pool, each with its own covered veranda. Beyond the hedge the land is smallholder farmland and a small coffee plantation, which is what every room looks out on. The main building is a longer gabled block with a deep wrap around deck facing the lawn.

With nine rooms it is by some distance the smallest property its group runs, and it feels like it. It is also the most personal: the retreat is named after Martina, the owner wife, and the property was the couple first home before it became a lodge. Meals are brought to your table rather than laid out on a buffet line, which at this size turns dinner into something closer to a house party than a hotel service.

The position is a working one. The Loduare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about fifteen kilometres west, roughly half an hour, and Lake Manyara is around half an hour the other way down the escarpment. Tarangire is about two hours southeast. From December to March the calving herds are out on the Ndutu plains within reach. June to October is the dry season and the most reliable window for the crater. April, May and November are the quiet months here and the lowest season.

Rooms have a king or twin bed under mosquito netting, a fireplace for the cold highland evenings, a writing desk and reading chair, a tea and coffee station with biscuits baked in the kitchen, and a bathroom with a large walk in shower and a separate WC, with toiletries in refillable pump jars. Each opens onto a private patio with chairs. Two of the nine are family suites that take extra beds, and some connect to the room next door.

Wifi reaches the rooms as well as the common areas, which is unusual among the Karatu lodges and worth knowing if you have to work. There is a pool, a large common deck, tropical gardens with a lot of birds in them, parking on site and security around the clock. Getting here is about three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport, or around two hours forty from Arusha, on tarmac through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu and up the escarpment. Lake Manyara airstrip is about half an hour away by road.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. A full day in the Ngorongoro Crater

The Loduare gate is about fifteen kilometres west, roughly half an hour. An early start puts you on the crater floor at first light, among black rhino, lion, elephant and flamingo on Lake Magadi.

  2. Dinner at your own table

With nine rooms there is no buffet line. Meals come to the table, cooked from produce bought around Karatu, and the kitchen will work around most dietary requirements with a little notice.

  3. An afternoon on the deck

The main building has a deep wrap around deck looking over the lawn and the pool to the coffee. It is the best place in the property to sit out the hot part of the afternoon between drives.

  4. Birding in the garden

The tropical planting and the surrounding farmland pull in a lot of highland birds. A slow circuit of the garden before breakfast is worth the early start.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Where exactly is Martina's Retreat?

One kilometre off the main tarmac road on the northern edge of Karatu town, looking onto a small coffee plantation and the farms around it. The Loduare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about fifteen kilometres west.

How long does it take to reach the Ngorongoro Crater?

About half an hour to the Loduare gate, and roughly an hour more down to the crater floor depending on the descent road and the queue at the gate. Most guests leave very early to be on the floor at first light.

How do guests get to the retreat?

By road it is around three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport and about two hours forty from Arusha, on tarmac the whole way through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu. Flying in, the nearest airstrip is Lake Manyara, roughly half an hour away by road.

How many rooms are there?

Nine, which makes this the smallest property in its group. Two of them are family suites that take extra beds, and some rooms connect to the one next door.

What are the rooms like?

A king or twin bed under mosquito netting, a fireplace for the cold highland evenings, a writing desk and reading chair, a tea and coffee station with biscuits baked in the kitchen, and a bathroom with a large walk in shower and a separate WC. Each opens onto a private patio with chairs.

What is included in the rate?

The published rate is full board, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered, and it includes the Tourism Development Levy and VAT. Park and conservation area entry fees, drinks, activities and anything else taken at the property are settled separately.

Are families with children welcome?

Yes. Two of the nine rooms are family suites that take extra beds and some rooms connect, and rooms can be set as triples with notice. Children between six and twelve sharing with adults are charged at a set child rate rather than a share of the adult price.

How are meals served?

At your table rather than from a buffet line, which is possible at nine rooms and is part of the character of the place. Breakfast is continental and English, the kitchen sources locally, and special diets are handled with notice. Safari lunch boxes are available on request.

Is there wifi and reliable power?

Wifi reaches the rooms as well as the common areas, which is unusual among the Karatu lodges and useful if you have to work. The property does not publish how its power is supplied, so plan for the usual highland pattern of charging in the evening.

What is there to do on site?

There is a pool, a large common deck looking over the lawn, and tropical gardens with a lot of birds in them. Most guests use the retreat as a base and spend the day out in the parks.

When is the best time to visit?

June to October is the dry season and the most reliable window for the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. December to March brings the calving herds onto the Ndutu plains within reach. April, May and November are the quiet months here and the lowest season.

What time is check in?

From two in the afternoon, with check out at ten in the morning. An early crater departure the next day is normal here and the kitchen will prepare breakfast or a packed box accordingly.

What's nearby

Worth the short trip.

  • Ngorongoro Crater

About half an hour to the Loduare gate. One of the most reliable places in Africa to see black rhino, alongside lion, elephant, buffalo and spotted hyena.

  • Lake Manyara National Park

About half an hour down the escarpment. Groundwater forest, big elephant herds, baboon troops and flamingo on the lake.

  • Tarangire National Park

About two hours southeast. Dry season elephant numbers here are among the highest in Tanzania, among baobabs.

  • Karatu coffee farms

The plantation next door is one of many. Several farms around Karatu run short tours of the planting and the washing stations.

  • Lake Eyasi

A long morning south. Time with Hadzabe and Datoga communities on the lake shore.
