A new garden property in Karatu, half an hour from the Lodoare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
About
Ngorongoro Uzuri Hideaway is in Karatu, the market town that sits between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands and serves as the staging post for the Crater. It opened in 2026 and is the newest of four properties run by the same Tanzanian family, who also run Ngorongoro Haradali Home a little further along the same road. Because it is new, there is very little written about it yet, and what follows is what the property and its contract actually state rather than what other guests have reported.
Karatu is a town rather than a park, so nothing here is billed as a conservation fee simply for sleeping. The Lodoare gate is about half an hour away, which makes an early descent into the Crater straightforward, and Lake Manyara National Park lies below the escarpment to the east. The highlands are cold after dark from June to August and green through the long rains of April and May.
The rooms are en suite, each with a private balcony, and the property sells them as single, double or twin, and triple. There is a swimming pool, a garden and a coffee corner refilled through the day. Food is the thing the family talks about most: the kitchen cooks largely from the property own beds and trees, and dinner is served at seven with everyone eating at the same time. Wifi reaches the shared areas rather than the rooms.
It suits a traveller who wants somewhere small and quiet for the night before the Crater and the night after, and who does not mind being among the first guests at a property that is still finding its feet. Anyone who needs a spa, air conditioning or wifi in the room should look at the longer established lodges in Karatu instead.
From Kilimanjaro International Airport the drive is four to five hours through Arusha and up the escarpment. Flying in, the nearest airstrip is Lake Manyara, roughly forty five minutes to an hour by road from Karatu.
Signature experiences
Karatu is about thirty minutes from the Lodoare gate, so a vehicle can be at the descent road soon after it opens. Early mornings on the floor are the best part of the day for cats and for the rhino that live around the Lerai forest.
The kitchen cooks mostly from beds and trees on the property, and the family will show guests round them. Dinner is at seven and everybody eats at the same time.
The park entrance is about an hour away down the escarpment. It is a half day of groundwater forest, hippo pools and shallow soda lake, and it pairs well with a second night in Karatu.
