About

Ngorongoro Farm House sits high in the cool Karatu highlands at the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lodge is a living, working coffee and avocado farm — terraced gardens framing views of the volcanic ridges, beans grown metres from the dining table, and rooms dressed in local fabrics and hand-crafted furniture. The pace is gentle, the produce is honest, and the property earns its place on the Northern Circuit by being a real working farm rather than a hotel pretending to be one.

The Karatu highlands sit at 1,500 metres altitude on the slope below the Ngorongoro Crater. The climate is cool and reliably comfortable; the farm sits at the highland edge with the wider Manyara escarpment dropping away to the east. Karatu town is twenty minutes down the road, the crater rim is an hour up, and the working farm grounds give children room to actually explore.

The afternoon coffee walk through the arabica trees, ending with a brew so fresh it changes most guests' definition of what coffee can taste like, is the property's signature. Long communal dinners celebrate northern Tanzanian flavours at their most honest — much of what arrives on the table is grown on the farm or within a few kilometres. Families find room to breathe in spacious interconnecting rooms and gardens that aren't fenced off as decorative.

The accommodation runs in three categories: Standard Rooms (Single, Double, Triple), the larger Suite Double/Single rooms, and an Interconnected Family Room. All are en-suite with warm interiors and generously proportioned beds.

Best for families on a Northern Circuit safari who want room for kids to actually move, slow-paced couples who want the working-farm rhythm rather than the crater-rim bustle, and travellers who care about food provenance.

Frequently asked

  • How many rooms does Ngorongoro Farm House have?

Around fifty rooms across Standard, Suite, and Interconnected Family Room configurations. Larger than most Karatu properties but spread across the working farm grounds.

  • When is the farm open?

Year-round. Karatu evenings are cool at 1,500m altitude throughout the year. June to October offers the driest weather; March to May brings the long rains.

  • How do guests reach the farm?

Either a 4-hour drive from Kilimanjaro International via Arusha and Karatu, or a 45-minute flight from Arusha Airport to Lake Manyara airstrip followed by a 1hr drive up to the highlands.
