The Manor at Ngorongoro by Elewana

Eighteen Manor Suites, set two to a cottage across nine cottages, plus The Stable Cottage behind the riding stables as a separate family unit. Each suite is sold as a single, a double, a twin or a triple.

Year round. It is a highlands base at Karatu rather than a seasonal camp, so there are no closed months. Karatu sits at around fifteen hundred metres, so evenings are cool in every season and every suite has a log fire.

About three hours and forty five minutes by road from Kilimanjaro International, or about two hours and forty five minutes from Arusha town. By air it is a flight from Arusha Airport to Lake Manyara airstrip and then a drive of about forty minutes up into the highlands, which is the figure Elewana publishes.

Yes, and children of any age are taken. The Stable Cottage has three bedrooms, its own front door and a playroom upstairs, and it takes two adults with up to four children. Pony rides on the estate are complimentary for children under ten.

Accommodation, all meals, soft drinks, daily laundry, the coffee estate walking tour, horse riding on the estate and the Lake Manyara airstrip transfer. Not included: park and conservation area fees, vehicle entry, flights, gratuities and the Maasai boma visit.

The Manor and the crater both work all year. June to October is the driest stretch. March to May brings the long rains, when the estate is at its greenest and the lodge at its quietest.

Karatu is about twenty kilometres from Loduare, the crater gate, which is thirty to forty five minutes of driving, then another twenty to thirty minutes down the descent road to the floor. Elewana publishes no figure of its own, so treat about an hour and a quarter gate to floor as the planning number.

Wifi is available in the main Manor House, which is where Elewana scopes it, and mobile coverage around Karatu is good. Do not plan on working from the suite.

The estate runs on mains electricity with a generator behind it, and suites have universal power outlets and an electronic safe. Tanzania runs on 230 volts with British style three pin sockets. The bathrooms have underfloor heating, which matters more than it sounds at this altitude.

FAME Hospital in Karatu is about ten minutes away, unusually close by Tanzanian safari standards, and the managers are first aid trained. The contract we hold excludes flying doctor evacuation cover, so please travel with your own medical and evacuation insurance.

Rides through the coffee plantings from the stable, a guided walk of the working Arabica plantation with a tasting afterwards, a spa with two treatment rooms, a pool in a walled garden, and a library for the cold evenings. The estate runs to about fifteen hundred acres, so a slow day here is a real option.

Yes. From 1 October 2026 visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold the government inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per adult and valid for up to 92 days, covering emergency medical care, evacuation, repatriation and lost luggage. Children aged 3 to 17 pay half and infants under 3 are free. It is bought online before you fly or on arrival, and residents of Tanzania and of East African and SADC countries are exempt. If you land in Zanzibar first, the Zanzibar policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of your trip price.
