Twenty six rooms around a black stone pool in a jungle garden, a short walk from Nungwi beach, with The Z Hotel next door to share.
About
The Z2 opened in 2025 next to The Z Hotel in Nungwi, at the northern tip of Zanzibar, about an hour and a half by road from the airport. It sits back from the sand rather than on it, a four storey white building wrapped in patterned screens and tall trees, and the whole hotel faces inward onto its own garden and a long pool of black Tanga stone, four metres deep at one end. It feels quieter and greener than the beach side, and the beach is a couple of minutes away on foot.
There are twenty six rooms. Twenty four are pool view rooms spread over the first, second and third floors, the same room on each level, with a king bed, Calacatta marble floors, furniture made by hand in Bali, Tanzanian art and floor to ceiling glass onto a balcony above the pool and palms. The higher you go the more you look over the treetops. On the fourth floor are two rooftop suites, open plan with walk in wardrobes; the smaller has a front terrace of twenty five square metres and a partial sea view, and the larger has an eighty square metre terrace around the front and side of the building with the ocean in full view. Both take a third guest on an added bed.
Rates are bed and breakfast. The Marigold, by the pool, serves light lunches and Indian street food in the evening from a chef from Mumbai. Everything at The Z Hotel is shared, so guests walk next door for the private beach area, the infinity pool on the sand, the seafood restaurant on its deck, Cinnamon, the Sky Spa and the gym. Snorkelling at Mnemba, diving and boat trips are booked through the tour desk.
It suits couples and friends who want the life of Nungwi and the facilities of an established beach hotel, with a room that looks into a garden rather than onto a busy beach. No guest under sixteen is accepted. The hotel closes every year from April to the end of May, and the minimum stay is three nights, or five over Christmas and New Year.
Signature experiences
The pool is a long run of black stone set into the garden, deep at one end and lined with loungers under the palms. Most rooms look straight down onto it.
The hotel own restaurant sits beside the pool and cooks Indian street food in the evening under a chef from Mumbai, with lighter plates at lunch.
Guests use the private beach area, infinity pool and restaurants at The Z Hotel, a short walk away on Nungwi beach.
The two suites on the fourth floor have private terraces facing west and north over the sea, the larger one wrapping around the building.
