About

About Warere Beach Hotel.

Warere Beach Hotel holds one of the best positions on Nungwi: a calm, sheltered strip of sand on the northern tip of Zanzibar, where the beach stays wide and swimmable right through the tide. It is the kind of address the big resorts wish they had, kept at a human scale. The whole hotel was built around the view, and three beachfront rooms sit on the high tide mark so the ocean is the first thing you wake to.

The water is the reason to come. The reefs and lagoons off the north point are among the clearest on the island, and the hotel runs boats out to Mnemba atoll for snorkelling, to Kizimkazi for dolphins, and along the coast for a sunset dhow sail. Back on shore, a freshwater pool sits among the palms and an open air poolside spa handles the hours in between.

Rooms run from a neat garden single to bright ocean view bungalows, family suites that sleep five, and the newest ocean front rooms, which each have their own private plunge pool. Every stay is full board, so breakfast, lunch and dinner from a kitchen that works around the daily catch and Zanzibari spice are all part of the rate, taxes and wifi included.

It rewards the traveller stepping off a mainland safari who wants an easy, honest beach finish: a family that needs space and a pool, a couple that wants the ocean close without a crowd, or a first visit to Zanzibar that should feel personal rather than processed. Nungwi village, the last working dhow yards on the island and the Mnarani turtle sanctuary are all a short walk from the gate.

Guests fly into Zanzibar and transfer north by road, about an hour and a quarter, and the team can arrange the pick up.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. Mnemba atoll snorkelling

A boat runs east to Mnemba, among the richest reefs in the archipelago, with a strong chance of dolphins on the way out.

  2. Kizimkazi dolphin trip

An early run down the coast to swim near the resident bottlenose and humpback dolphins of the south.

  3. Sunset dhow sail

A hand built wooden dhow drifts off the beach as the light drops over the channel toward the mainland.

  4. Poolside spa

An open air spa beside the pool for massages and treatments between swims, calm and unhurried.

  5. Stone Town spice tour

A half day among the clove, nutmeg and cinnamon that gave Zanzibar its name, tasting as you walk.

  6. Swahili cooking class

Learn the coconut, lime and spice that define the island kitchen, then eat what you cook.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Where is Warere Beach Hotel?

On the beach just east of Nungwi, at the northern tip of Zanzibar, about 1 hour 15 minutes by road from Zanzibar airport.

Is it right on the beach?

Yes. Bungalows step down to the sand and three ocean front rooms sit on the high tide mark. Nungwi keeps a wide, swimmable beach through the tide, unlike much of the east coast.

Is it full board?

Yes. Every stay includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus all government taxes and wifi. Transfers and optional tours are extra.

Are families with children welcome?

Yes. There are family suites sleeping up to five, a pool, and children 0 to 3 stay free in a cot when sharing with adults.

What room types are there?

Six categories: garden view rooms, a single garden view room, partial ocean view rooms, ocean view rooms, ocean front rooms with a private pool, and family suites in both garden view and ocean view that sleep up to five. Single, double and triple occupancy are priced separately, so you pay for the room you actually book.

What is there to do?

Snorkelling trips to Mnemba, dolphin trips to Kizimkazi, sunset dhow sails, a spice tour, a Swahili cooking class, and a poolside spa on site.

When is the best time to visit?

Nungwi is good most of the year. The driest, sunniest months are June to October and December to February; the long rains of April and May are quietest.

Do I need travel insurance to visit?

Yes. Visitors to Zanzibar must hold the Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per person for the whole stay, bought online at visitzanzibar.go.tz before arrival. Tanzania residents are exempt. If you enter mainland Tanzania first for a safari, the mainland policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of our quote.

What's nearby

Worth the short trip.

  • Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond

A short walk away; a tidal pond that rehabilitates green and hawksbill turtles.

  • Nungwi village and dhow yards

Watch traditional dhows being built by hand, the last working yards of their kind on the island.

  • Stone Town day trip

About one hour south; a UNESCO old town of Swahili, Omani and Indian history.
