The journey

The first sound is the sea pulling away. Before six, the lagoon is already retreating across the sand, leaving a mirror of shallow water that holds the pink of the sky. A mat is laid on a wooden deck under the palms, and the only instruction is to breathe in time with the soft wind coming off the reef. This is how a day here can start, and it is as slow as you want it to be.

We open with one night in Arusha so the long flight has somewhere to land, then fly to the island the next morning. Six nights follow on the east coast between Matemwe and Paje, where the tide sets the pace. A yoga holiday in Zanzibar here means sessions at first light and again in the cooler hour before dusk, offered by many east coast hotels, as are spa treatments with clove, lemongrass and coconut oil from the island's own gardens. Nothing is scheduled unless you add it.

At low tide, walk the warm flats among rock pools of tiny fish and sea grass. Further out, women from the villages tend their seaweed lines in bright kanga cloth, bent at the waist in water up to their knees, and they will usually greet you with a smile and a soft "jambo". When the tide floods back, the lagoon turns warm and turquoise, just right for a long float before lunch.

What sets this quiet beach holiday on the east coast apart is how plainly we price it. Every cost you book is itemised: lodging, transport, any fees, the excursions you add, and the total. No hidden markups, no padded packages. Once you have booked, a local Expert looks after you on WhatsApp until you fly home.

The island is calm and gentle from June to February, which we mark as the best window, though the coast stays open all year. Days end without ceremony: fresh juice, grilled fish, the call to prayer carried on the breeze, and an early night with the shutters open to the sound of the returning sea.

Every camp on the route is yours to choose. Park fees, lodge nights and vehicle days are itemised on the page before you book. The total you build is the total you pay.
