The journey

The boat slows over water so clear the shadow of the hull sits on the sand four metres below. A green turtle lifts from a coral head, unhurried, and the reef opens beneath you in blues and ochres: a moray watching from its crevice, a shoal of fusiliers turning as one. This is Mnemba Atoll snorkelling, a short run by boat from the beaches facing the reef on Zanzibar's east coast, where we base this trip.

We begin with one night in Arusha, a soft landing after the long flight, then fly to the island the next morning. Six nights follow on the stretch between Matemwe, which faces the atoll, and Paje. Here the Indian Ocean breathes twice a day. At low tide the lagoon drains to reveal a living reef flat, and you can walk out at first light among sea stars, sea cucumbers and fishermen wading with their lines. At high tide the water returns, warm and turquoise, right up to the palms.

For anyone planning a diving holiday in Zanzibar, the atoll has around a dozen sites, from gentle sandy slopes suited to new divers to drift dives along the outer wall. Snorkelling trips and dhow sails are optional extras, run by the island operator you choose. Diving is not part of the trip price and is paid locally. If you are asking about the best time to dive Zanzibar, October to March typically brings flat seas, warm water and good visibility, which is why we flag it as the window for this trip, although the coast stays open all year.

What makes this Zanzibar east coast beach holiday different is how we price it. Every cost you book is itemised for you: lodging, transport, any park or conservation fees, the activities you choose, and the total. No hidden markups and no bundled extras you did not ask for. Once you have booked, a local Expert looks after you on WhatsApp until you fly home.

Evenings are slow. Fresh fish grilled over coconut husk, the call to prayer drifting from the village, and the hiss of the tide coming back across the flats in the dark.

Every camp on the route is yours to choose. Park fees, lodge nights and vehicle days are itemised on the page before you book. The total you build is the total you pay.
