About
About this experience.
The vehicle rounds a stand of acacia mid morning and there it is: a table with a cloth, a few folding chairs, a small gas stove already warm, and a member of the camp team pouring coffee. You have been out since before sunrise, the herds are grazing a few hundred metres away, and there is nowhere you need to be. Eating in the open is one of the simplest pleasures of a safari, and one of the most remembered.
There are three main forms. The bush breakfast follows a dawn drive or a balloon flight; balloon operators include a plated breakfast where you land. The bush lunch keeps you out in the field through the middle of the day. Our partner Miracle Experience serves a freshly cooked three-course lunch at a quiet spot in the Serengeti or Tarangire, so you do not lose an hour driving back to camp. Then there is the private dinner, set up by your lodge on a rise near camp or beside a fire, usually for a special occasion.
What it is really like depends on where you are, because the rules differ by area. In the Ngorongoro Crater, meals are eaten at designated sites such as the Ngoitokitok spring picnic area near the eastern wall, and the authority issues a separate hot lunch permit, currently 23.60 US dollars per vehicle, for food cooked at a lodge and served warm on the crater floor at the Conservation Commissioner's discretion. In national parks, bush meals follow park rules on where vehicles may stop. In the private wildlife management areas beside the parks, such as Randilen or Burunge near Tarangire, lodges have more freedom and evening dinners in the bush are easier to arrange.
The honest caveats. Weather can move a dinner indoors. Insects come out at dusk, and birds and baboons are quick to spot unattended food, so guides will tell you where it is wise to eat. A full private dinner takes planning by the lodge and is not possible every night or everywhere. And the setting, not the menu, is the point; food is good camp cooking rather than restaurant theatre.
For dietary needs, including halal, tell your Expert at the start. We confirm requirements with each lodge in writing before you travel, and Savannah & Sands never includes drinks packages in its quotes. Every bush meal is an optional, separate line on your quote: the operator's or lodge's charge and any permit, such as the crater's hot lunch fee, are shown on their own so you can choose the one or two moments worth adding.
It suits honeymooners and couples celebrating something, families who would rather not drive back for lunch, photographers who want to stay out through midday, and anyone who wants to slow a busy itinerary down for an hour.
How to structure it
Building it into your trip.
Pick one or two moments rather than adding a meal everywhere. A bush breakfast after a balloon flight or a dawn drive is the easiest win. In the Serengeti or Tarangire, a cooked bush lunch lets you stay out through a full day in the field. Save a private dinner for one special night, ideally at a lodge in a wildlife management area where setting up in the bush is simpler. Tell us about occasions and dietary needs early so the lodge can plan.

Common questions
Questions, answered.
How much does private bush dining cost?
Prices vary by lodge, operator and setting, from a simple breakfast after a drive to a fully staffed private dinner. In the Ngorongoro Crater there is also an authority permit for hot lunches, currently 23.60 US dollars per vehicle. On Savannah & Sands every bush meal and any permit is an optional line on your quote, never a hidden fee.
Can we have a bush meal inside the Ngorongoro Crater?
Yes, at designated picnic sites such as Ngoitokitok spring near the eastern wall. Packed lunches are standard, and lodges can serve a hot lunch on the crater floor with a separate permit from the authority. Your guide will advise on where to sit and how to keep food safe from opportunistic birds.
Can you cater for halal and other dietary needs?
Tell your Expert at the start of planning and we confirm halal, vegetarian, allergy and other requirements with each lodge in writing before you travel. Bush meals are prepared by the lodge or operator, so advance notice is essential. Savannah & Sands does not include drinks packages in any quote.
Is a private bush dinner possible every night?
No. It depends on the lodge, the area's rules and the weather. Lodges in wildlife management areas beside the parks usually have the most flexibility. We suggest choosing one special evening and arranging it in advance, with the lodge's dining room as the fallback if it rains.
Is it safe to eat out in the bush?
Yes. Sites are chosen by experienced guides, often with a ranger or extra staff present, and set up with vehicles close by. You should follow your guide's instructions about where to walk, especially after dark, and keep food secure from opportunistic birds and baboons.
