About

Kitela Lodge sits on a working coffee estate at the edge of the Karatu highlands, an hour from the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Generous lawns roll toward an infinity pool over the valley, the rooms are larger than the Karatu norm, and the food and beverage programme is the strongest in the area — long evenings on the lawn watching the light change over the escarpment is the part most guests come back to.

Karatu sits at 1,500m altitude on the highland slope below the Ngorongoro Crater. The town is a working agricultural hub (coffee, avocado, maize) rather than a tourist village, which gives the lodges in this band a different feel from the lodge clusters higher up on the crater rim. Kitela leans into the agricultural character: a coffee plantation walk in the afternoons, garden-to-table dining in the evenings, and an unhurried pace that contrasts with the activity-packed pace of the rim lodges.

The accommodation is three Standard categories: Standard Single, Standard Double, and Standard Triple, all per-person basis. Rooms are larger than the regional norm with polished wood, generous linens, and en-suite bathrooms. The infinity pool perches at the edge of the property looking down into the rift valley.

Best for guests who want the Ngorongoro Crater on their itinerary without sleeping on the rim (cold, crowded, hotel-like), couples drawn by the slower pace and the food programme, and travellers using a single Karatu base for the crater plus Lake Manyara plus Olduvai Gorge over three or four nights.

Access is by road from Arusha (3 hours), or by flight to Lake Manyara airstrip followed by an hour up to the Karatu highlands.
