Twenty cottages in colonial style, set out through the coffee, in single, double and triple configurations. Two cottages can be joined by a connecting door to make a family room. The main farmhouse building holds the lounge and the restaurant.

All year. Karatu sits at 1,500m altitude so evenings are cool, and the lodge operates without seasonal closures.

Either a four hour drive from Kilimanjaro International by way of Arusha and Karatu, or a 45 minute flight from Arusha Airport to the Lake Manyara airstrip followed by an hour on the road up into the highlands.

Yes. Triple rooms take small family groups and two cottages can be joined by a connecting door for larger ones. Two things worth knowing: the grounds run out into working farmland on the edge of a wildlife area and animals do pass through, and the pool carries no depth markings, so small children need an eye kept on them.

Full board, soft drinks with meals, drinking water, tea and coffee, and the afternoon coffee plantation walk. Not included: park fees, concession fees, the game drive vehicle, soft drinks, flights, gratuities and personal items.

About an hour from Kitela to the crater descent road. Most guests spend a full day on the crater floor with a packed lunch.

Power runs 24 hours. Wi Fi reaches the main lodge and the public areas and is not dependable out in the cottages. Mobile coverage in Karatu is reasonable by safari standards but thins fast once you climb toward the crater rim, so treat the lodge as your last reliable connection before a crater day.

A guided afternoon walk around the working coffee farm and the vegetable garden, an outdoor pool and sun deck looking over the valley, and a massage cabin. Most guests use Kitela as the night either side of a crater day, so the walk and a long evening on the lawn watching the light go off the escarpment is usually the whole programme, and that is rather the point of it.

Karatu sits at about 1,400 m on the highland slope, so days are mild and nights are properly cold, with lows of roughly 11 to 15 degrees and the coldest nights from June to August. The cottages have fireplaces for that reason. Pack a fleece and a warm layer for the evening and for the start of a crater day, which begins before first light.

FAME Medical in Karatu town runs a 24 hour emergency service and is the facility most visitors in this area are taken to. The lodge sits about 8 km outside the town. Carry your own travel and medical evacuation cover, since it is not part of the rate.

Check in from midday, check out by 10:00. If you are arriving off a long drive out of the Serengeti, tell us and we will ask the lodge to hold a cottage so you are not waiting on the lawn with your bags.

No. The lodge stands on open farmland at the edge of a wildlife area and animals move through the grounds, particularly after dark. The team will walk you back to your cottage after dinner.

Yes. From 1 October 2026 visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold the government inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per adult and valid for up to 92 days, covering emergency medical care, evacuation, repatriation and lost luggage. Children aged 3 to 17 pay half and infants under 3 are free. It is bought online before you fly or on arrival, and residents of Tanzania and of East African and SADC countries are exempt. If you land in Zanzibar first, the Zanzibar policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of your trip price.
