About
Marera Valley Lodge sits on the open farmland edge of Rhotia village, a few minutes east of Karatu town and about half an hour from the Lodoare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. White cottages with steep blue grey roofs stand in an arc around a close mown lawn and a small pool, with the main building closing the circle. Beyond the garden the land falls away into the Rhotia valley and rises again to green hills dotted with farmsteads and maize plots. This is highland country at around 1,700 metres, so the days are mild and the evenings genuinely cold.
The lodge is a base rather than a game property. There is no wildlife on the grounds. What the position buys you is reach: the Ngorongoro Crater is roughly half an hour to the west, Lake Manyara and its groundwater forest about forty minutes down the escarpment, and Tarangire around an hour and a half east. From December to March the migration herds are calving on the short grass plains at Ndutu, which makes Karatu a sensible staging point. June to October is the dry season and the steadiest window for the Crater. April and May are the long rains, when the highlands are at their greenest and the lodge is at its quietest.
Rooms sit in semi detached cottages, each with a private timber railed deck a step above the grass. Inside they are high ceilinged and warm toned, with a built in fireplace, a bed under mosquito netting, a sitting corner with a writing desk, polished dark floors and a woven rug, and french doors onto the verandah. Bathrooms are ensuite with a shower, and the hot water is solar heated. The main building holds reception, a lounge with a fireplace, and a dining room. Outside there is a verandah over the pool, a fire pit for the evening, a gift shop, and the Rosemary Spa in a quiet corner of the planting. Wifi reaches the common areas.
It suits travellers who want the Crater and Manyara within easy reach without paying for a crater rim address, families who need a triple or two connecting rooms, and anyone who would rather sleep somewhere with gardens and a fire than in a roadside hotel. Food is a real part of the stay: an extensive organic vegetable garden supplies the kitchen, a walking track loops around it, and dinner is cooked to order in an open kitchen and served by candlelight.
Getting there is a drive of roughly three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport, or about three hours from Arusha, on the tarmac through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu and up the escarpment. For those flying, Lake Manyara airstrip is about twenty five minutes away by road.
Signature experiences
An early start west to the Lodoare gate and down onto the crater floor, where black rhino, lion, elephant and flamingo on Lake Magadi are all in one bowl. Back at the lodge for a late afternoon by the fire.
A track loops the organic vegetable plots, which supply most of what arrives at dinner. It takes about twenty minutes and is a good way to stretch after a long drive.
Massage and other treatments in a quiet corner of the garden, away from the main building. Worth booking for the evening after a day of crater roads.
A day trip south to Lake Eyasi to spend a morning with Hadzabe and Datoga communities. It is a long drive from Karatu and best arranged the day before.

On the edge of Rhotia village, about four kilometres east of Karatu town in the northern Tanzanian highlands. The Lodoare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is roughly half an hour west by road.
About thirty minutes to the gate and roughly an hour and ten minutes down to the crater floor, depending on the descent road and how busy the gate is. Most guests leave very early to be on the floor at first light.
By road it is around three and a half hours from Kilimanjaro International Airport and about three hours from Arusha, on tarmac the whole way through Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu. Flying in, the nearest airstrip is Lake Manyara, roughly twenty five minutes away by road.
All year. The Karatu highlands sit high enough that evenings are cool in every month, which is why each room has a fireplace.
June to October is the dry season and the most reliable window for the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. December to March brings the calving herds onto the Ndutu plains within reach. April and May are the long rains, green and quiet, and the lowest season here.
Yes. The cottage rooms can be set as triples with notice, and two of the cottages connect so a family can take both. Children between six and twelve sharing with adults are charged at a set child rate rather than a share of the adult price.
The published rate is full board, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered, and it includes the Tourism Development Levy and VAT. Park and conservation area entry fees, drinks, laundry, activities and anything else taken at the property are settled separately.
Each sits in a semi detached cottage with its own timber railed deck onto the garden. Inside there is a fireplace, a bed under mosquito netting, a sitting corner with a writing desk, an ensuite bathroom with a shower, and a coffee and tea station.
Wifi reaches the common areas and is best used there rather than in the rooms. The lodge runs on solar alongside mains power, and the hot water is solar heated, so an early shower after a cold night can take a little patience.
There is a pool, a walking track that loops the organic vegetable garden, the Rosemary Spa for treatments, a gift shop, and a fire pit lit in the evening. Most guests use the lodge as a base and spend the day out in the parks.
Largely from the lodge garden and farms around Karatu. Dinner is cooked to order in an open kitchen and served in the dining room, and the kitchen handles dietary requirements with notice.
No. This is cultivated highland farmland and the lodge is a touring base, not a game property. The wildlife is in Ngorongoro, Manyara, Tarangire and the Serengeti, all reachable from here.
