About
Mara River Camp sits 10 to 15 minutes from the famous Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti, the stage for the migration's most cinematic moments. From July through October, columns of wildebeest and zebra arrive at the river in their tens of thousands, hesitate at the bank, and then commit to the crossing through crocodile-infested water with the cliffs and the herd's own panic working against them. The single most-photographed wildlife event in Africa.
Beyond the migration window, the Kogatende region holds resident lion prides, leopard along the river's bend, and a robust elephant population in the rolling woodlands east of the river. The Lobo and Bologonja sub-regions to the north and northeast are less visited and reliably productive for big cats year-round.
Mara River Camp recently underwent upgrades including a swimming pool. The camp runs twelve tented suites in canvas, plus a Family Suite, all with private patios facing the river escarpment. Each tent has hardwood floors, en-suite hot water bathrooms, and an open-air lounge. Meals are full board with three courses; house beverages are included.
Best for migration-focused travellers in the July to October window, photographers chasing the river-crossing imagery, and luxury-leaning safari guests who want a base less than 15 minutes from the action. The camp is also a strong shoulder-season choice (November to June) for guests who want northern Serengeti's resident wildlife without the migration crowds. Rates drop significantly outside the high-season window.
Access is by Cessna flight from Arusha to Kogatende airstrip (1hr 30min including the road transfer JRO to Arusha Airport), then a 30-minute game-drive transfer to camp. Drive access from Arusha is impractical at 11 to 12 hours and is rarely chosen by guests.
Signature experiences
Mara River crossings (Jul to Oct)
The migration's most photographed event. Vehicles position on the river escarpment to capture wildebeest and zebra committing to the crossing. Mara River Camp is 10 to 15 minutes from the primary crossing sites, a real proximity advantage during the peak season.
Lobo sub-region game drives
30 to 45min north of camp. Less-visited country with resident lion prides on the granite kopjes, leopard along the river bend, and reliable big cat sightings year-round.
Cultural visit
A guided visit to a Maasai or Kuria community on the conservation area's northern fringe. Educational rather than performative.

Kogatende Northern Serengeti (Mara River)
Fly-in: Approximately 3 hours total: 1hr JRO to Arusha Airport (ARK) by road, then a 1hr 30min Cessna Caravan from ARK to Kogatende airstrip, then a 30-minute game-drive transfer to camp. Karibu's vehicle meets guests at Kogatende.
Drive: Drive access not recommended: 11 to 12 hours from Kilimanjaro International via Arusha, Karatu, the Ngorongoro highlands, and the entire length of the Serengeti from south to north. Bush flight is the standard route.
