About

About Serengeti Lake Magadi Lodge.

Serengeti Lake Magadi Lodge sits above Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake in the Moru area of the central Serengeti. The lake is not the kind you swim in. It is alkaline and seasonal, it draws flamingo when the water and the algae are right, and in the dry months it becomes a pale crust that reads beautifully at the end of the day. Around it the country is open grass broken by granite kopjes, which is the classic Serengeti picture.

Rooms come in two outlooks and the lodge prices them differently. Lake View rooms face the water and carry the higher rate. Kopjes View rooms face the granite outcrops behind the lodge and cost less. Both have a private balcony or terrace, one super king bed or two singles, and an ensuite with a flush toilet and a hot shower, with space for one extra bed. We show both so the choice is yours rather than ours.

The lodge is all inclusive: breakfast, lunch and dinner with soft drinks, plus laundry to a daily value. Power is solar with a generator behind it and WiFi reaches the main areas. There is a viewing deck, a lounge and a curio shop, and a massage can be arranged.

The position suits a longer central Serengeti stay. Moru holds lion on the rocks, the wider area is one of the few parts of the park with black rhino, and the southern plains are close enough to reach when the herds are calving in February. It is also quieter than anything near the Seronera valley.

Access is by air to Seronera airstrip, about an hour and ten minutes of flying from Arusha, then a game drive transfer south and west. Driving from Arusha takes a long day with an overnight in the highlands.

Signature experiences

Why guests choose it.

  1. Flamingo on the soda lake

When the water level and the algae are right the lake turns pink with lesser flamingo. It is seasonal and nobody can promise it, which is part of the pleasure.

  2. Lion on the Moru kopjes

The granite outcrops nearby hold lion through the heat of the day. Guides know which rocks are occupied.

  3. Moru rock art

Maasai painted shelters and the gong rock, a boulder that rings when struck, are a guided morning from the lodge.

  4. The southern plains in calving season

In February the herds drop their calves on the plains south of here and the predator activity is the highest of the year.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Where is the lodge?

Above Lake Magadi in the Moru area, the southern part of the central Serengeti. It sits between the Seronera valley and the southern calving plains.

What is the difference between the two room types?

Lake View rooms face the soda lake and carry the higher rate. Kopjes View rooms face the granite outcrops behind the lodge and cost less. The rooms themselves are the same size and layout.

Will we see flamingo?

Only when the lake holds the right water and algae, which is seasonal and varies year to year. When it happens it is a highlight, and when it does not the lake is still a good looking thing to sit above at the end of the day.

When is the lodge open?

Year round. The contract prices every month, with the highest rates from July to October and over the days around Christmas and New Year.

How do guests reach the lodge?

By air to Seronera airstrip, about an hour and ten minutes of flying from Arusha Airport, then a game drive transfer south and west. Driving from Arusha takes a long day and is normally broken with a night in the highlands.

Are families with children welcome?

Yes. Children under 6 stay free of charge sharing with their parents, children from 6 to 15 pay a reduced rate, and one extra bed fits in a room.

What is included in the rate?

All Inclusive board, which is breakfast, lunch and dinner with soft drinks, plus laundry to a daily value. Park fees, the Tourism Development Levy and concession fees are charged separately.

Are game drives included?

No. Game drives come through the Game Package, a shared safari vehicle plus airstrip transfers charged per person per day with a minimum of two guests. A private vehicle can be booked instead, subject to availability.

Is it a good base for the calving season?

Yes. February puts the herds on the plains south of the lodge, and the predator activity around them is the highest of the year. It is one of the better central Serengeti positions for it.

Is there power and connectivity?

Solar power with a generator behind it, and WiFi in the main areas.

Do I need travel insurance to visit?

Yes. From 1 October 2026 visitors entering mainland Tanzania must hold the government inbound travel insurance, 44 USD per adult and valid for up to 92 days, covering emergency medical care, evacuation, repatriation and lost luggage. Children aged 3 to 17 pay half and infants under 3 are free. It is bought online before you fly or on arrival, and residents of Tanzania and of East African and SADC countries are exempt. If you land in Zanzibar first, the Zanzibar policy covers you instead. It is paid by you directly and is not part of our quote.

What's nearby

Worth the short trip.

  • Simba Kopjes

About an hour east, on the road toward Naabi

Granite outcrops standing out of the southern plains, named for the lions that use the high rock as a lookout over the herds below. Rock hyrax, raptors and the blue and pink Mwanza flat headed agama live in the cracks, and the light on the stone at dawn is the reason people stop.

  • The Seronera river valley and the park visitor centre

About an hour and a half each way

Permanent water and the densest big cat country in the park, with leopard worked for in the sausage trees along the banks. At Seronera there is a visitor centre with a raised walkway through a kopje, a video room and a shaded picnic area.

  • Retima hippo pool

Beyond Seronera, a full morning out

A permanent pool where two rivers meet, holding a resident hippo group. It is one of the few places inside the park where guests may leave the vehicle and look down on the water from a raised bank.

  • The southern short grass plains in calving season

From about half an hour south of the lodge, late December to April

The herds move down onto the short grass south of here to calve. The births are concentrated into a few weeks, the predator activity follows them, and the timing moves with the rain each year, so no two seasons run the same.
