About

Serengeti Pioneer Camp sits on a quiet kopje in the southern reaches of the central Serengeti, deliberately designed in the 1930s safari tradition. Twelve canvas tents under thatch, polished campaign furniture, brass fittings, and a separate family suite with two interconnecting tents. The mood is classic Out-of-Africa — gin-and-tonics on the veranda before dinner replaced by halal-respectful equivalents at S&S guests' request, candlelit dining at long shared tables, and rock-top breakfasts on the kopje at sunrise.

The location places Pioneer Camp well for the southern Serengeti's calving season in February and March, when the migration drops its calves on the short-grass plains around Ndutu, an hour to the south. The camp's central position also keeps it within reach of the Seronera River Valley for leopards (45 minutes north) and the Moru Kopjes for rock paintings and black rhino (1 hour southwest).

The accommodation runs in two main categories: the Safari Tent (Single, Double, Twin, Triple variants, all per-unit) and the Family Suite (a single per-unit four-person suite with two interconnecting tents). Each tent has hardwood floors over groundsheets, an en-suite bathroom, and a private veranda onto the bush. Pioneer Camp's Game Package style includes twice-daily game drives and a two-hour walking safari with a professional guide.

Best for guests who want a deliberately classical safari experience (more atmospheric than design-led), the calving-season window from February to March, photographers drawn by the southern Serengeti's open landscape, and travellers who want a stylistic counterpoint to the contemporary Serengeti Explorer in the same region.

Access is by Cessna flight from Arusha to Seronera airstrip (1hr 15min including the road transfer JRO to Arusha Airport), then a 30-minute game-drive transfer to camp.
