Seven rooms in the middle of Jambiani village, fifty metres back from the lagoon
About
Zanzistar sits in the body of Jambiani village, on the south east coast of Unguja, about fifty metres back from the sand. There are seven rooms in all. Six of them stand in a walled garden around a small pool, with a restaurant under a thatched roof and a rooftop above it, and the seventh sits on the beach itself, looking straight out at the lagoon. Jambiani is one of the oldest and least altered stretches of the island, seven kilometres of white sand with a working village behind it, and the lodge is inside that village rather than fenced off from it. You walk out of the gate into daily life.
The east coast tide is the thing that shapes a day here. Twice every day the ocean pulls back a long way and the flats come out, sandbars and warm pools and the lines of seaweed that Jambiani women have farmed by hand for decades. At high water the lagoon fills and the reef holds the swell off, which is why this stretch and neighbouring Paje are where most people in Zanzibar learn to kitesurf. Swimming is best on the rising and high tide; low water is for walking out barefoot, which is the hour most guests remember.
Each room has its own garden, a private bathroom with a separate toilet, air conditioning and a king size bed under a mosquito net, and the rooms are decorated one at a time rather than to a pattern. The kitchen cooks fish, meat and vegetarian dishes to order, there is no set menu and no half or full board plan, and breakfast is served in the garden for the six rooms at the lodge. The staff speak Kiswahili, English and French. It is a small place, run closely, and it feels more like a house than a hotel.
It suits couples who want somewhere unfussy and specific, families taking the separate bungalow, and anyone who wants to kitesurf, since the school and the dive centre are a minute away on foot. It is a natural second half to a safari: about an hour by road from Zanzibar airport, so you can land from the Serengeti in the morning and be on the sand by the afternoon. It is not a resort, and guests who want a buffet, a spa and a swim up pool should look elsewhere on the island.
Signature experiences
Twice a day the ocean withdraws and the flats open up in front of the village. Walk out barefoot among the tidal pools and the seaweed lines, which Jambiani women still tend by hand, and watch the dhows settle onto the sand.
The reef holds off the swell and leaves a wide flat lagoon, which is why this coast is one of the best places in the Indian Ocean to learn. A school and a dive centre are a minute away on foot.
The kitchen cooks to order rather than to a buffet, with fish landed locally, and there is a rooftop above the garden restaurant for the end of the day.
Resident bottlenose and humpback dolphins live in Menai Bay off the south coast, about forty minutes away. Boats leave at first light, which is both the best time to see them and the kindest.

Frequently asked
Seven. Six are at the lodge, around the garden and the pool, and the seventh stands on the beach itself about fifty metres away. The largest is a separate bungalow of two connecting rooms that takes up to seven guests.
In Jambiani village on the south east coast of Unguja, about fifty metres back from the sand across the village road. Paje is about seven kilometres north and Stone Town about an hour and a quarter by road.
By air to Zanzibar airport, then about an hour by road across the island. The lodge arranges the car. Coming from a safari, flights from the Serengeti airstrips and from Arusha and Kilimanjaro all land at Zanzibar.
Yes for the six rooms at the lodge. The one room on the beach is sold without breakfast, and the property adds it at ten US dollars per person per day if you want it.
Yes. The kitchen cooks to order from a menu rather than serving a set plan, with fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes, so there is no half board or full board rate. Meals are paid at the property.
The property takes families and the separate bungalow is built for them. At the moment our system can only price rooms for adults here, because the rate sheet prices each room by the number of guests in it without saying what a guest under eighteen pays. We have asked the property and will open child pricing as soon as they answer.
The tide on this coast is large. At high water the lagoon fills and the reef keeps the swell off, which makes for calm swimming; at low water the sea pulls back a long way and the flats come out, which is the best time to walk. Check the tide table for your dates and plan swims around the high.
Yes. The flat shallow lagoon in front of Jambiani and Paje is one of the best places in the Indian Ocean to learn, and a kite school and a dive centre are about a minute away on foot. The windy months are roughly December to March and June to September.
June to October is the long dry season and the most reliable window, and December to February is the second, hotter and usually dry after the short rains. The long rains run March to May, with April the wettest month.
Yes to both. Every room has air conditioning, a private garden, a private bathroom with a separate toilet and a king size bed under a mosquito net, and there is wireless internet in the rooms and in the common areas.
The Zanzibar tourist tax of four US dollars per person per day is collected at the property, and the compulsory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance of forty four US dollars per adult is bought online before you travel. Meals other than breakfast, beverages, transfers, excursions and massages are also extra. Guests are asked to bring their own beach towels.
It is one of the easier landings. The flight from the Serengeti arrives at Zanzibar in the morning, you are at the lodge by early afternoon, and four nights is enough to feel the pace change before flying home.
