On Pemba the morning starts with the smell of cloves drying on mats by the roadside and the sound of water lapping at the mangroves. The roads and beaches are quiet. A dhow slides past the reef, and the green hills rise behind you. A few days earlier you were watching lions on a granite kopje in the Serengeti. This is the shape of a safari and Pemba Island honeymoon: the wild plains first, then a quiet, green island in the Indian Ocean.

We begin with a night in Arusha, then two in Tarangire among baobabs and elephant families, and three in Seronera, where lion and leopard keep their territories all year. For couples, you can add an optional hot air balloon flight over the plains at dawn or a private bush dinner by lantern light. A night near the Ngorongoro Crater follows, with an early descent onto the crater floor for buffalo, the chance of black rhino and, in some months, flamingos on the soda lake.

From the crater you take two short flights: first to Zanzibar, then a quick hop north to Pemba. Five nights on the island give you time to slow right down. This is barefoot luxury on Pemba Island: small lodges, warm water and quiet reefs. Diving on Pemba Island in Tanzania means steep coral walls dropping into deep blue water, and the snorkelling around Misali Island is in clear, protected water. Neither is part of the trip price. Both are paid locally, as are forest walks and visits to the clove plantations inland. September and October bring calm seas and dry days, which is why we mark them as the best months.
