The journey
By August the world has its eyes on the Masai Mara. But when do wildebeest cross the Grumeti river? Earlier, and quieter. From late May into July the herds push west through the Serengeti corridor and confront the Grumeti, where Nile crocodiles hold the same lines and the drama is the same drama, only with a tenth of the vehicles at any one sighting. You hear it before you see it. Hooves on the stone of the riverbank. The catch of breath when one wildebeest commits and the herd commits behind it. The slap of bodies against water that has been waiting since the rains finished.
We open the trip in Tarangire for two nights under the baobabs, push west into Seronera for two nights of central Serengeti plains game viewing, then move into the Grumeti corridor itself for two nights at camp on the river bend. This is the early-season wildebeest crossing Tanzania that the well-travelled safari customer reads about and almost never sees. The route closes on the Ngorongoro Crater rim for a single full day in the caldera before the flight home. Nine days, four parks, the quieter alternative to Masai Mara crossings on the calendar.
The camps along the route are yours to choose, the drives and walks you layer in are yours to shape, and the way you cross between parks is yours to set. Every park fee, every lodge night, every vehicle day is on the page before you book — no commissions, no markup buried in a single bundled price. If the dates work and you want the lesser-known great migration river crossing, this is the route.
