The journey

At first light on the Ndutu plains the grass is short and wet, and the herds stretch to the horizon. A wildebeest drops to the ground, and within minutes a damp, wobbling calf is on its feet, calling for its mother. Somewhere nearby a cheetah is watching from a termite mound. This is the Serengeti calving season safari in February, up close, and it is the reason this trip exists.

We open with a night in Arusha and one in Tarangire, then drive west for three nights at Ndutu, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra come to give birth on the southern short grass plains. Each day typically brings newborn calves, with the chance of cheetah on the open grass, hyena clans and vultures gathering overhead. An Ndutu calving safari is about patience: your driver guide reads the herds and the predators, and we let the plains set the pace. Two nights in Seronera follow, with lion prides on the kopjes and leopard along the river, then a night near the Ngorongoro Crater before an early descent onto its floor, with the chance of black rhino.

Then the trip turns to the sea. Two short flights via Dar es Salaam take you to Mafia Island, a quiet place of mangroves, wooden dhows and warm water. From January to March this is the time to swim with whale sharks off Mafia Island, as these huge, gentle fish feed on plankton near the surface. The Mafia Island Marine Park also offers coral gardens, reef fish and the old ruins on Chole Island. All of these are optional extras, run by your lodge and priced separately, so you take only what suits you.

What makes this pairing ours is how honestly it is priced. Every cost is itemised: park fees, lodging, transport, activities, and the total. There are no hidden markups and no bundled extras. Calving and the whale shark season overlap from January to March, which is why the calendar is limited to those months, with February as the best month. This route was planned by our team in Arusha so the plains and the ocean sit together without a rushed day. Once you have booked, a local Expert looks after you on WhatsApp until you fly home.

Every camp on the route is yours to choose. Park fees, lodge nights and vehicle days are itemised on the page before you book. The total you build is the total you pay.
